A hybrid Corvette Stingray? 'Don't laugh,' GM president says
    Los Angeles Times
    By David Undercoffler
    August 29, 2013

With the ink barely dry on our review of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe, GM President Mark Reuss swung by the L.A. Times office in a gleaming new Cyber Gray Metallic Stingray Convertible.

On his mind were consumersí changing buying habits, the strength of the auto market in the coming years and GMís plans for diesel and hybrid powertrains in its vehicles.

    Like the Corvette?

"Actually, donít laugh," Reuss said with a telling smile. Using an energy recapturing system like that found on hypercars such as Ferrariís LaFerrari or McLarenís P1 -- both hybrids -- presents many advantages.

"I think itís a very attractive idea, actually," Reuss said. "I think it would be really fun to do, I think it would build capability inside our company and I think people would love it."

I read the first sentence then the next and immediately thought diesel Corvette. Lol!

Since Porsche and Ferrari are working on hybrid supercars I'll bet GM watches this space closely to see how well received they are.

F1 cars are hybrids so why NOT as long as the car gets BETTER for it

it could be cool if like F1 KERS the driver could get a short BOOST of a few hundred HP from the KERS BATTERY almost like NITRUS (-:

It's the best direction they could take. Most other supercar manufacturers are doing it, and GM already has a lot of the related engineering talent and experience to apply to it.

People who still think of electrified cars as sad appliances (Prius) and golf carts (i-MiEV) are really stuck in the past. I think any car that doesn't recapture energy and idles its engine at a stop is going to be considered a dinosaur within 10 years.

Hmm. There's plenty of space in the hatch area for a battery. Extra weight over the rear axles could also help get power down to the asphalt, right?

Re: A hybrid Corvette Stingray? 'Don't laugh,' GM president says

There's a reason why Reuss said that. GM has clearly thought about it. Hybrid/EV performance vehicles and supercars are already here folks; it isn't wishful thinking anymore.

Hybrid supercars would have been a frivolous project in the past but the reason for doing them today goes well beyond posters for boys to drool over. Advanced cooling, aerodynamics, batter technology, lightweight materials and engineering, powertrain integration, emissions and fuel economy improvements and more are just some of the reasons to develop products like a hybrid Corvette or Cadillac supercar.

Without looking at the bigger picture, products like this might seem unnecessary and a big waste of money but the R&D will be invaluable 5 – 10 years down the road as the technology trickles down into everyday vehicles. Voltec is the most advanced EV system on the market today but GM is sitting on it.

There’s really only one way for GM to go with Cadillac and the ZR1. Others are already on their way, including Acura. Hopefully GM isn’t late to that game either.

A year ago Mark said GM was leaving Hybrid and only consentrating on electric cars, A year ago Mark said GM would make a dission and stick with instead of stopping work on a project and restarting all over new. if you want us to believe in the new GM then start acting like it.

Since Mark Reuss is talking about this so soon after the introduction, I wonder if the car has already been designed to accommodate a hybrid system, and has built-in locations/space for the components.

Its coming....already in development...see Voltec and GM's experience in this area...and the way the industry is headed.

    IT IS COMING.
