I think that the notion of making a halo car to restore the luster of the SS name could be a Big mistake. They should be doing extremely upgraded performance versions of all of the models that could warrant the upgrade. The Cobalt SS and HHR-SS were two Hot fwd vehicles that Did help rebuild street cred for the SS moniker. This seems to be a missed opportunity to pick up some of the slack from losing the driving excitement division. Historically, SS had a tradition of standing for performance for the "every man", not performance for the privileged few....sad really.

If by "Halo Car" they mean it will be a money losing sales dog they may be right.

I guess it wouldn't be GMI without people piling on the scorn before a car is even unveiled or priced.

Sounds to me like between this car and the Impala, Chevrolet is preparing to reshape market perceptions... that "Yes, a Chevrolet can be $40,000".

I was talking cars a little with someone at the office, (who does not know I log on to car sites every day) that suggested: "Why not look at an Impala? The dealer in my town has lots of them for $15-$17 thousand".

Chevrolet probably wants to dispel that widespread impression for offering cheap, volume cars. It would make sense to do this. Ford and Chrysler have very pliable images, from minicars up to full size.

Another $40K+ car? I hope not. Man why is it so hard to like GM @ this point?. Save for a few of the automobiles produced by this company I'm really dissapointed by the rest.
Hoping that 2013 will be the year that GM has been talking about for 12 years now......HOPING.....

Chevelle or Nova would have been better, IMO
Historically, "SS" WAS a model of car.

Google up on the devaluation of fiat money. Really, these prices are not as out of bounds as they appear at first.

When I was a college sophmore in 1988 and talking cars with friends, I knew then that a cheap entry level car was about $8000 (K-car, Ford Escort, Cavelier/Sunbird) and a nice full size (like a Buick) would be double that, about $16000.

Inflation since then at 4% a year means it takes about 2.5X the amount of dollars today to buy the same things.

So that would be $20K base entry level and $40K full size. We may not be comfortable witnessing these numbers, but in terms of purchasing power, it's about the same.

Of course, some who simply cannot give up their love for either, and can afford it, will simply enjoy the type of performance the SS should offer in a more practical package. Any Corvette and/or Camaro owners care to chime in?

I wonder if the SS will bring in a new type of customer to Chevrolet, as well... the type of customer who might otherwise be inclined to drive a sport sedan with more of a European flavor? Of course, if GM is aiming for more of the NASCAR demographic, this may not be the case. Regardless, I look forward to the SS's arrival.
I think your question might be better directed towards Corvette owners. However, if I were in a financial position to, I might well be inclined to buy an SS sedan in addition to my Camaro (depending, of course, on how well the production model appeals to me).

As far as Chevy attracting Euro sport sedan fans, I honestly think that niche will be filled nicely by the new ATS (from what it sounds, one will be able to buy a nicely-optioned ATS for the price of an SS sedan).

I just got one at the same dealer--they're showing 5 remaining (2011 9C3 model). It had 23 miles on it when I first test-drove it.

I try to argue this point to a lot of people, however it seems to go in one ear and out the other. As if they are not capable of understanding such concepts, that 4% inflation adds up and that their incomes have to keep up with it at the least. So 4% inflation, you need to get a 4% raise every single year just to be as wealthy. Anything below that point and you are actually becoming poorer every year. So if you made $10,000 a year in 1988 at 4% increase a year you would make $14,800 by 1998 and $21,900 by 2008. By 2018 you need to make $32,400 if inflation were to maintain 4% until 2018 (during this recession inflation had been down and we had some deflation).

I hope 40k can take it home, but I have a gut feeling it will take a lot more

That will be one cruel joke to the people who actually waited for this car if it starts >$40K. Reuss would be one sick ******* if he did that. For that price people wanting a sport sedan will buy the better ATS Premium 3.6L.

Seriously Reuss, don't break my heart.

So...if $40,000 is your limit, why not look at the ATS? I just went on Cadillac's website and optioned one out (nicely) for $38k and change.
