Five Awesome Things You Didnít Know About the New Chevrolet Camaro Z/28

Moments after Chevy shocked everyone with the scalding new Camaro Z/28, we began our own scalding-fast process: chasing down GM execs for all the details and back story on this beast. Obtained through some official channels and some channels that were, well, less so, here are the five coolest things we learned:

    1. The Z/28 badge almost went on an entirely different car.

    2. The car that became the Z/28 had been brewing for years, and Chevy knew it had to use the LS7 engine.

    3. During development, the Z/28′s code name was ďSteve.Ē

    4. After going for a ride in an early mule, Dan Akerson said, ďWe need to put the board of directors in this.Ē

    5. Recent prototypes apparently are lapping test tracks as quick as, well, stuff youíd never imagine it could keep up with.

    4. After going for a ride in an early mule, Dan Akerson said, “We need to put the board of directors in this.”
Board of Directors response, " This car is amazing, but we all know that you can do performance vehicles. Now do the same for your mainstream products like the Malibu....."

Dan Ackerson is a clown, not a car guy.. He'd piss his pants if he rode in any of my cars. That really shows you how far Chevrolet has fallen.... The only one that does surprise me is # 3. I knew not about Steve....

Impala looks to be good from initial reviews.

Cars like the Z/28, 1LE, CTS-V, Z06, ZR1, Cobalt SS are so good BECAUSE they are put together by a team of CAR GUYS with a clear goal in mind. Idiot ideas like, "Hey, lets build the next Camaro on the J Car platform 'Cavalier'" are quickly stomped out by the CAR GUYS. Yes, according to Scott Settlemire, there really was a group inside GM that pushed for that! Cars like the Malibu turn out like they do because all the non car guys get their say. If the same group of engineers that designed the cars I listed above were allowed to do the next Malibu, and were protected from the non car guy idiots, you would get another top notch GM product.

The following part of the article is what actually brought tears to my eyes. It shows that this new Z/28 is SO GOOD, that it is able to get its message through to even non car guys:

    4. After going for a ride in an early mule, Dan Akerson said, “We need to put the board of directors in this.”
Not long after Dan Akerson arrived as the new CEO at GM, one gearhead executive took him out for a ride in a Z/28 mule. “You need to put the board of directors in this car to have them experience it.” The board obliged, and their reaction? “This is unbelievable.” Suffice it to say, that was a glowing green light to go ahead with development and production.

Oh, I love the new Impala... It's gorgeous and Proper Chevrolet! It just doesn't have AWD.. I'd dump our Traverse in a split second if it did. We wanted AWD/4WD but didn't want an SUV/CUV in the first place. Had the Impala offered AWD like the Ford Taurus & Fusion, I would have waited and bought it instead. Now we're stuck with the thought of do we wait and see if the Impala or possibly Chevelle offer AWD? Or do we actually have to buy a Ford of all things... Which frankly about makes me want to slit my wrists. It is what it is though... If Chevrolet won't step up to Ford's level, I'll have to step over to Ford eventually.

LS7 in Chevrolet SS would also be amazing.....

I have a feeling that was the other car considered..

What "entirely different car" could wear the Z/28 badge that is not a Camaro? Or are we referring to ZL1?

Although I really like the new Camaro, I would not consider myself to be a diehard fan like some on this board. That being said, even I am very excited for the launch of this track monster! I, like many others I'm sure, am very curious to find out what cars the Z/28 has taken down at the track. GT-R? Nah, really? Is it possible?

Official channels? We found all this out just by talking to 3-4 people at the show. Hell, I put half of this stuff in our First Look article.

ZL1 rockers and a few other parts have "Z28" embossed on them next to the part numbers.
