Re: Edmunds Spies 2011 Cruze

The Cruze is turning out quite nicely. I really will consider getting one by the time it's ready, but I'll probably end with up a VW tdi of some sort. All the mileage plus the fun of torque

The turbo 1.4 is going to have more torque than you might expect. Note that the GM 2.0 turbo produces 260 lb-ft of torque, so, extrapolating backwards, expect 182 out of the 1.4.

The VW TDI has 235. But it's going to have only 140 hp. And the 1.4, again extrapolating from the 2.0, ought to have somewhere around 180.

Hold off on the TDI, maybe.

So why can't GM put some effort into making the bread and butter Cobalts better than ass.
The ride and steering are truly awful.

Re: Edmunds Spies 2011 Cruze

Torsion Bar RS would not stop me buying a Cruze/Viva if the rest of the car is up to scratch. Absolutely nothing wrong with it.
Could it be that the Opel and Saab DeltaII cars have IRS and the Chev spec is differentiated (so as to not be considered 'badge engineered') by the simpler suspension???

What does GM need to ditch so they can have IRS on their compact cars? They already use MacPherson struts up front.

Re: Edmunds Spies 2011 Cruze

It doesn't have the Cobalt name because the Cobalt will stay and be redesigned, as a world vehicle or not.

Words from the mouth of GM's NA product planner.

You do realize that they also pointed to Ford...

Regardless, they called it a subcompact (and they're not the first to, I have no idea why - it rides on Delta II you fools) and I haven't heard 'torsion beam' anywhere in the video, simply them saying 'that's a shame, as...'.

Three of those names carry some rather negative connotations.

The Corvair was cast as a deathtrap by Ralph Nader that would roll over at anything above walking speed. Untrue, but the damage was done. It did have a chronic oil leaking problem though, and was a rear engine car. GM initially said this car would compete with the Mustang. Wrong! The name just wouldn't be of much use in today's market.

The Vega not only leaked oil, it blew it out the tailpipe at the same time while still relatively new. GM denying there was a problem for so long, along with the fact that it was flimsily built should keep this name buried forever. It's a strange world, but I can't imagine there are many Vega lovers still out there.

Some people were actually fond of the Chevette, but I'm not one of them. To me, it epitomized cheapness and lack of innovation. Better built than the Vega maybe, but way too much exposed metal in the interior and a strong theme of cutting costs everywhere you looked. Even the name sounds like a cheap ripoff of Corvette or Chevelle or both. My wife didn't like it at all when I referred to her as my "wifette" so I rest my case.

Re: Edmunds Spies 2011 Cruze

Im just seeing the clip. What kind of crap journalism is going on at Edmunds to say because it has a torsion bar rear "is a shame"?? These dumbass fools make me mad sometimes.

Another thing. I wonder if GM is keeping the Cobalt name for a performance coupe/affordable two door hatchback car based on Delta II?

About another 30K employees or Rick Waggoner's salary.

Are you sure? I was under the impression the 1.4 was topping out in the 120-140 range.

The 1.4 Turbo will be avaiable with 120HP & 140HP
and I think the torque range will be 130 - 150 lb-ft.

The 1.6XER has 115HP and 115 lb-ft.
The 1.8XER has 140HP and 130 lb-ft.
The 1.6LET has 180HP and 170 lb-ft
The 2.0NHT has 220HP and 260 lb-ft.
