Edmunds Commentary On Chevy Corvette: It "Sucks"; No Longer "Cool".

Link: http://blogs.insideline.com/straight...hotopanel..2.*

Before I begin, let me say that the following is not an attack on the people who buy Corvettes. They are good, clean, patriotic car lovers, and I think they should all be applauded for buying American.

I mean it from the bottom of my heart. Every barrel-chested baldy (sorry, retirees) and stripper (sorry, Bambi) who bought a Corvette recently deserves our respect and admiration for spending their hard-earned cash on America's sports car. God bless them all. I hope they enjoy their cars.

This column is not about them. It's about the Corvette itself, which sucks.

Truth is, I'm not really sure when it began to suck. I must have been watching my new Girls Gone Wild DVD and missed it, but it does suck and I think we should all be mortified by its suckiness.

Sure it performs incredibly well, but the Corvette as a relevant performance car has lost its way. Instead of being the everyman, all-American supercar it once was, the Vette has become too expensive, too extreme and too cheesy.

Chevy has blown it by allowing the Corvette's price and performance to get out of hand. And it continues to wrap the Vette in a dated package that is driving America's young car enthusiasts elsewhere. Do you realize that the base price of a new 2010 Corvette is $48,940? That's 50 grand for the cheapest Vette Chevy will sell you. The days of a kid graduating from college, getting a good job, saving up and buying a new Vette are long gone.

This is a problem.

Come on, Chevy. Stop going in the wrong direction. Nobody ever asked you to make the Corvette the fastest car you could buy or the fastest car for the money. Nobody needs the Corvette to win Le Mans or pack 600-plus horsepower and cost over $100,000. Of course we want it to perform well, but we also need it to be affordable, insurable and durable. And we want it to be cool.

And today the C6 Corvette just isn't cool.

Come on GM, give us a Corvette we the people want today, not the Corvette you thought we wanted in 1989. -- The Mechanic, Inside Line Contributor

For the money - there is nothing that can touch the Corvette and its various models.

Wow, is this a biased commentary. How many people want to bet that he has never even driven one for an extended period? I'm sure he walked to the parking lot, opened the door to his Japanese crap box and blissfully drove off.

Anybody who has one knows how much enjoyment you receive.

If there's one car that is really respected by everyone, even import lovers, it's the Corvette. And that's even before you mention the great price.

This guy is an *******

Stupid article. The Corvette is one of the vehicles GM can be proud of. It is still relevant in todays world. What kid is going to buy a $80,000.00 Nissan GT-R right out of school. They could buy the Vette and pay off $30,000 in student loans for the same price. With a kid in college, my Vette still seems to be "cool" when they see it. They all seem to long for one, just like it's been for over 50 years.

So the measure of cool today is "you can afford one out of college?"

I don't ever remember a time when the average college grad could buy a Corvette with his first job.

This guy is a jerk with nothing to do or write about so he comes up with this. This is a meaningless article of crap written because the author is the irrelevant one that will be quickly forgotten once he is now longer spewing trash like this to his few arrogant readers.. Does this idiot realize that All sportscars have gotten faster and more expensive???

Let me say it now. This Jerk would be spewing the exact opposite if the Corvette would have followed the course he laments in his stupid article. Perfect example of a fool with a job writing about cars for uptight posers with cars other than Corvettes that he is trying to get some adulation from so he can feel like the smartest person in the room...

It's when you put a Corvette next to a Subaru WRX that you can really see how much the Vette sucks. When you turn the key, the sound of that 4 cyl just screams sports car.

Why is it that the media is so set on publishing extreme positions chocked full of hyperbole and downright rude language.

This is probably one of the more stupid articles I've read. There are also negative stereotypes for Infiniti and BMW owners. Yuppie scum. You know, the guys wearing the sweater tied around their neck, oversized sunglasses, drinking a perrier... Oh wait, that's an '80s stereotype. Just like the crap that this person wrote about the Corvette. Has this guy even looked at a C6???? I think this guy has watched to many episodes of Scarecrow and Mrs. King with Bruce Boxleitner driving an '84...

Talking about evergreen stereotypes...

I didn't know that any redneck mechanics can write and even put an essay about car style and ultimate fasion statements in Edmunds Inside Line. Just wow.

Re: Edmunds Commentary On Chevy Corvette: It "Sucks"; No Longer "Cool".

This is a very unfair comment. What he is saying is true but it is also true about every other sport car out there.

GM put a couple of affordable sports cars out there and they fell flat on their stomachs and the Miata, which arguably is the popular sport car out there is widely regarded as a girls cars. So I guess that in this day and age, "macho" comes with a big tag price.

Finally, IMHO the only uncool thing about the Corvette is its design by Tuooerware interior, but its exterior can't be cooler or better looking.

At one point while reading I thought he was talking about the XLR

I wonder how many sales will this article cost to GM?

Re: Edmunds Commentary On Chevy Corvette: It "Sucks"; No Longer "Cool".

When was a Vette ever "cheap"? Never! It was only ever cheap relative to the competition.
Go back to the '60's... wasn't a Vette double the price of a regular Chevy? It still is.

All cars got more expensive... live with it, chump.

"Nothing new under the sun."

1989 - Corvette is not up to the world class competition, it sucks.
2009 - Corvette is world class and is too expensive, it sucks.

These people didn't wake up this morning and decide to start hating on GM ...

The Corvette is the best American Nameplate ever. For what you get, even on the base model, the combination of handling, horsepower, and fuel economy for 50k compared to its competitors can't be beat! Now just fix the interior and you'll be there!

Pure, 100%, brain-dead drivel. The Corvette is unique in that it is an American car respected across the globe. Even magazines universally hostile to Detroit have the give the Corvette its proper dues.

So, it "sucks" because it "drives America's young car buyers elsewhere"?

Really? That must account for all the crummy old compacts with silly wheels and big exhausts that I see kids in. They must all have thought "hmmmm . . . the 2010 Corvette really sucks, so I'll buy a '99 Civic instead". Of course. That must be it.

I knew Edmunds were total ****knockers, but they truly have excelled themselves this time.
