Early this morning General Motors began regular production of the all-new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. Production for the new compact is taking place at GM's Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant and is bringing Chevrolet's best-selling car globally, to the United States starting today.

As of today Cruze's coming out of the Lordstown facility will be making their way to dealerships in the United States and Canada. The Cruze is already sold in over 160 different countries and is a best-selling car worldwide.

"We are delivering a car with the quality which Americans desire matched with features they would not expect in this segment, from 40 mpg on our Eco model to 10 airbags as standard across the range,” General Motors North America President Mark Reuss said. “Of equal importance, we are working to redefine the views on a domestic carmaker building such a car here in the United States."

The new Cruze replaces the outgoing Chevrolet Cobalt and is a larger car than its predecessor. GMI sources at Lordstown have stated that GM management has pushed quality on the Cruze heavily, citing specific examples of pre-production units that were flagged for the most minor details.

The Lordstown Complex, which built its first car in 1966, has produced more than 14 million vehicles, making it one of the most productive automotive facilities in the world.

"The third-party reviews of the Cruze in North America have been fantastic," said Lordstown Plant Manager Bob Parcell. "Our Chevrolet dealers tell us Cruze demand is hot and interest levels are the highest they have seen in 20 years. This will help drive our complex and Chevrolet into a new and exciting era."

The 4,500 team members at the Lordstown Complex are scheduled to begin shipping the Cruze to U.S. and Canadian dealers next week.

Safety is the primary selling point for Tim Arbutina of Sagamore Hills, Ohio, who recently ordered a Cruze for his 17-year old daughter. The Arbutina family was among the crowd celebrating the first cars coming off the line at Lordstown.

That 17 year old daughter, with her dad, was on the podium and received the first Cruze key.

So when did the Cruze get introduced to the world? How many years ago was that? It is about damn time it is finally on sale here in the States. Best of luck Chevy/GM on this one.

Exactly. Nothing like being part of a publicity stunt instead of being in Algebra class...

    Re: Cruze Production Begins Today

Production just started and the ads started earlier this week. What are they thinking? How about advertising products when a person can actually see one in the showroom? The ads should have come out in 3 weeks, not now. This is like the G6 debacle.
