    Cobalt SS Sedan: Dead

    Cobalt SS Sedan: Dead

Thanks to a little investigative journalism, the folks over at Autoblog have uncovered that General Motors will cut the Cobalt SS Sedan from its product lineup for 2010. A sad day indeed.

The discovery came about due to GM hosting its Order and Reference Guides online. Look for the Cobalt and noticeably absent is the SS Sedan. Chevy will, however, continue to bring seven Cobalt models to market including the Base Coupe, LS Coupe, LT Coupe, Base Sedan, LS Sedan and LT Sedan. Oh… and don’t get too worried… the SS Coupe has been spared the axe.

I dont understand, can't GM see these things coming? How do you release a product only to cancel it a little while later? Isnt research done to see if the product is viable before it is conceived? Are they really that short sighted? Or did they simply not care?

Probably coincides with the fact that the current Lacrosse is being replaced. For MY10, that would be the only platform left to use the LS4/4T65-HD and, being lower volume, makes sense to get rid of to save costs.

As for the Cobalt, that is really too bad. All the reviews I have seen show that car to be an extremely competent. If only they would have upgraded the interior...

Oh well, bring on the cruze I guess. I hope they carry the LNF with it. I would definitely consider that for the daily driver.

Really a shame. While I know alot of folks like the looks of the coupe, the 4-door was the choice for those who want both practicality and sportiness.

Really a shame -- but let's hope the Cruze gets the SS treatment and picks up where the Cobalt left off...

LeftLaneNews is also reporting that the STS-V is dead:

Not that anyone knew there was an STS-V or would miss it.

Never liked the looks of this version. Way too bland in sedan form, and bar-of-soap blah-looking enough that even as a "sleeper" it was more likely to put you to sleep than impress if it blew by. Nothing about the styling made me want to own one, but I'm sure there are some "tuners" out there who could put enough body kit festoonery on it to make it look acceptably sporty.

If I'm going to shell out the bucks for an "SS" or a hot sport compact, I expect it to look something like the Mitsubishi Lancer. And the excuse that the Cobalt has "American styling" doesn't fly with me. The Charger has American styling. The Camaro. The Cobalt looks like a Civic from 1999 -- outdated and not American-looking either. In that case, I'd take the modern-looking import over import styling from 10 years ago.

won't miss the STS-V at $80,000 it was already overpriced now the CTS-V outguns it for alot less as for the pontiac G6 GXP I won't shed a tear either since it was pretty much a GTP model with a god awful body kit

Even a body kit can not help this car. To be honest the rear end looks downright stupid. A 2000 Kia Rio comes to mind.

But in regards to the General's decision......you can't blame them. I want this Cobalt SS really really bad...ugly rear end and all. But I am NOT a "typical" car buyer either. I drive an Armada for God's sake. Nissan sold like 3 of them last month, right?

I know the coupe looks better, but I have NO interest in it. The 4 doors are very appealing to me.....every bit as much as the 260 hp turbocharged engine...the manual trans....the limited slip, etc etc.

Agreed, the STS-V was a car I'd love to own, but I could buy a freaking house here in Texas for that kind of money. Hard to justify a purchase like that, which leaves it to the rich folks. And for rich folks to want to pay good money for it, the STS-V needed to have a certain aura of prestige that comes from awesome reviews -- prestige that I'm not sure it ever had.

Because the traditional blue-haired set with money was not going to buy a sport sedan like the V. They would opt for a cushy, floaty DTS instead.

I don't know about the US, but in Canada they were selling SS non turbo/SC models that were just tuned for a bit more power than base models, I'll be happy if those piles go away. You see an SS but then wonder why it just doesn't have the appeal that you thought they were supposed to have.

Glad to see the SS sedan gone, nobody bought them anyway, and they looked boring.

Looks like Pontiac was just the beginning. I think some of those Chevy fans who cheered the death of Pontiac won't be cheering much longer.

Pontiac lover and Pontiac owner (Grand Prix)

I think that most of these cuts really make sense.....

The STS V became pointless with the CTS V making 556BHP compared to 469BHP and costing a good deal less. I think that the STS is going to be phased out and the CTS will replace it while they bring in a lower then CTS vehicle and price it around $30,000. The CTS already has a starting price of around $37,000 now so this only makes sense to kill off the STS V.

G6 GXP is kind of on the ugly side and Ive only seen one of them on the streets (Ive seen 3 Ferrari F355s in one day) so I don't see how it could have been a good seller. The SS cobalt who knows could have been a really poor seller (even more so with the market down so far) that it only made sense to kill it. or maybe they are getting ready to bring the Cruze to market and maybe we will continue to have a SS coupe even during Cruze production.

I think they kind of make sense also, but I am interested to see what else gets cut as most of the cuts appear to be the performance variants of vehicles.
