Chevrolet Unveils 350 HP+ 2.7L OHV I-4 Midget Racing Engine

Chevrolet Unveils New Midget Racing Engine
Written by: SPEED Staff SPEEDtv.com 05/07/2008 - 12:45 PM Indianapolis, Ind.

The Chevy Midget racing engine's all-new design features an exhaust-side camshaft that allows for optimal airflow and repositioning of spark plugs and fuel injector nozzles.

Chevrolet's all-new Midget racing engine was unveiled today at Indianapolis Motor Speedway by GM representatives and United States Auto Club (USAC) team owner Tony Stewart. Designed by GM Racing specifically for the USAC National Midget Car Series, the new purpose-built, four-cylinder Chevrolet racing engine will initially power Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) drivers Tracy Hines and Levi Jones in upcoming events. The new Chevy Midget engine will be available to all USAC competitors through independent engine builders.

One year ago, Chevrolet announced its sponsorship of Tony Stewart Racing in open-wheel competition," said Chevrolet general manager Ed Peper. "Now Chevrolet has taken the next step by creating an all-new racing engine for this popular grassroots racing series. Chevrolet races to win, and America's brand is aiming for more victories in this uniquely American form of motorsports."

The new methanol-burning 166ci (2.7-liter) Chevy Midget racing engine produces more than 350 horsepower. The lightweight, inline four-cylinder engine employs an aluminum block and cylinder head with two valves per cylinder. Per USAC rules, the Chevy Midget engine is equipped with mechanical fuel injection and utilizes an electronic ignition system.

“The Chevy Midget racing engine is definitely going to be an asset to Tony Stewart Racing," said team owner Tony Stewart. "Having the Chevrolet bowtie on the engine and not just on the side of the car as a sponsor is indicative of how much technical support the brand has given our program. In the past, we’ve competed with engines that were based on Chevy parts but weren't necessarily a Chevrolet engine. The Chevy Racing engineering and marketing staffs have really embraced the TSR racing programs, and the debut of this new engine is the start of another exciting new chapter in our relationship.”

Pretty sweet engine. I guess the rules force it to only be a two valve head? Methanol is some pretty wicked stuff. There is a local guy here who burns Methanol in his weekend warrior on the street with a 6-71 BDS blower and when he pulls into the lot on a hot summer night and cuts the engine off you can see the condensation form on the blower because the Methanol burns so cold. You can actually touch the blower immediately after turning off the motor.

That would fit nicely in my s10's engine bay. I don't need a hood, do I?

I wonder if a version of this could have useful application in a production car? Could it be a way to get awesome power and better mileage in a smaller package?

chevy is also developing a 410 cu in engine for tony's sprint cars. it is based off of the all aluminum LS series used in the corvette. this is why tony will be out of those toyotas and back in a chevy in NASCAR soon

Now turn this slant 4 into a 500hp 4.0 litre slant 6 and you have my attention.

An I6 version would rev higher and smoother too.

I am outraged at the insensitivity of GM. How dare they call this a "midget" engine. They no longer want to be called the "M" word, there little people! Which would make this a little people engine. : )

p.s. - Thank you liberals for political correcting everything to the point we all want to vomit repeatedly.

That is a good idea, put that in a G8 or Alpha sedan or a 400 HP version (adjusting HP for street use) or even a 300 HP 3.0L I-6.

One thing I definitely noticed was how the article mentioned the new engine along with Tony Stewart. I see this as a big plus in Stewart "maybe" leaving Gibbs/Yoda at the end of the year. I sure hope so.

I am totally amazed in to how they can keep pumping out all that power from the 4 cylinder engine... That is ridiculous... but awesome!!!

Something tells me that we're not in the 90's no more!!!

In the sea of new automotive faces,
there's nothing like the appreciation and beauty of an older model. Let's represent!
