Chevrolet Spark and Sonic Drive with Siri

Chevrolet Spark and Sonic Drive with Siri
    Automotive News
    November 27, 2012

Early next year, the Chevrolet Spark (1LT, 2LT) and Sonic LTZ and RS will integrate Siri, the intelligent assistant that helps get things done just by asking. Chevrolet made the announcement today at the Los Angeles International Auto Show.

Through the cars’ standard Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, customers with a compatible iPhone* running iOS 6 can direct Siri to perform a number of tasks while they safely keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. To further minimize distraction, Siri takes hands-free functionality even further with an Eyes Free mode that enables users to interact with their iPhone using nothing more than their voice while keeping the device’s screen from lighting up.

Owners simply connect their iPhone with the MyLink radio via Bluetooth, pair with the system, and use the steering wheel voice activation button to begin and end sessions with Siri in Eyes Free mode.

In the Spark and Sonic RS, owners can use Siri in Eyes Free mode to:

    • Make voice-activated, hands-free calls to Contacts on their iPhone
    • Play songs in the iTunes library, and even switch music sources automatically from AM/FM/XM radio to iPod mode
    • Listen to, and compose and send an iMessage or text message to a phone number or anyone in saved Contacts
    • Access Calendar and add appointments
    • Minimize distraction even more by keeping the screen of the iPhone from lighting up, even when Siri answers simple questions such as game scores or the dates of national holidays
    • While in Eyes Free mode, Siri will not provide answers to complex questions that require displaying a web page.

“It says a lot about our commitment to small-car customers that Chevrolet has announced that Siri Eyes Free capability will be available in the Spark and Sonic well before the luxury brands,” said Cristi Landy, Chevrolet marketing director for small cars. “Safe, easy, reliable and portable connectivity is a top priority for our customers, and Siri complements MyLink’s existing capabilities to help deliver an incredible driving experience.”

Both the Spark and the Sonic also come with six months of OnStar’s premium Directions and Connections service. OnStar brings added safety, security and connectivity to these vehicles, including services such as Automatic Crash Response, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, Vehicle Diagnostics and Roadside Assistance.

Most smartphone owners can also download the RemoteLink Mobile App, which allows OnStar subscribers to control and manage certain vehicle functions from their phone. For more information on OnStar’s services, visit onstar.com.

Spark and Sonic, but not the Cruze

Seems that GM is intent on making the Cruze their own version of the Corolla....

Yeah hopefully, because Google Now is so much better than Siri.

Tip to whoever does the photos for GM:

When showing the first vehicles to be able to connect to siri, use the latest iPhone5 and not an earlier gen.

Good job GM! Though everyone is correct, they need to make the cars interact with the other major phone platforms.

This is great news but it seems that the Cruze is not included because it does not have the new radio of the other two models. What really sucks is that instead of being aggressive with the Cruze that are just letting it slip behind.

The car is sold global and two years before it came here so that had to have re-coupe the development cost by now. Why no upgraded lights or interior like in AUS.

I'm sure they will eventually, just rolling out with the number 1 platform first

*facepalm* How do you ignore 70% of the Smartphone market? Figure that the iPhone4S/5 make up, at best, 20% of all phones and 30% of all smart phones. And assume that Siri changes and adapts over time. Why not make a system that interacts with the phone, not the voice commands?

Re: Chevrolet Spark and Sonic Drive with Siri

This isn't new news. It's in the 2013 Sonic manual. BT Audio passthru is already in the 2013 Sonic MyLink. You just hold down the phone control button for a couple seconds and it will (eventually) beep at you, letting you know it's ready to listen. On my 2013 Sonic LT when it works, it works about as well as my 6 year old Premier DEH-980BT did (not that well in general and hardly at all if there's background noise). And it's not Apple specific, lots of phones are supported.

What I don't understand is why they haven't enabled voice control of the stereo's audio playback functions like in the Cruze or Equinox. That's functionality that is built in to the underlying Microsoft Sync platform that both GM's MyLink and Ford's MyFord Touch are based on. If it's for cost reasons, they're choosing cost over safety since I have to glance over at the touchscreen to browse for music instead of verbally selecting a track.

Taking out the CD player and voice control to "allow" MyLink owners to use their existing smartphones is pure marketing spin. What they're really doing is turning the head unit into an overgrown bluetooth speakerphone.

It would be nice if GM would allow bluetooth passthru to work via just tapping the phone button on the steering wheel instead having to hold it down and wait.

I think its funny that android system phone have a bigger world wide market share but companies bend over backwards for apple...
Would of thought it would of been better sense to appeal to system that has bigger market share.

Apparently, Consumer Reports has just completed hot weather testing of the new Spark and Sonic Models.
