Re: Chevrolet to drop «Cobalt» name

Maybe they'll go back to Cavalier?

The only rationale I can think of is that maybe GM plans a unified name for this car worldwide.

I really hope its "new" name isn't something crappy like Lacetti, which screams "Korean Daewoo!" to me.
Perhaps it could explain partially the reason, and I agree with you about the Lacetti (and let's add Nubira to the list, since I think, it's another Daewoo nameplate). I suggest to keep the Cobalt for the lower trim model or keep it as a sub-series (The Impala beginned as a subseries of the BelAir)

New Contest!! Let the naming begin:

Oldsmobile Omega...
the irony is the name Omega is currently used by GM in Brazil currently as a rebadged Holden Commodore http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2007/07...-turn-for.html

Re: Chevrolet to drop «Cobalt» name

GM is truly run by a bunch of idiots and an 80 year old grandpa.

Never heard of a thing called "Brand Equity?"
Even the people at Ford have opened their eyes and figured out at least that much!!!

My first was a '74 Nova SS and was one of the hottest rides in my high school parking lot. I miss it dearly. This nameplate has as much recognition as Malibu & Impala.

Did Chevy damage the name when it rebadged Corollas in the 80s? Maybe to some degree but many people probably won't remember. I think it would be great on a two-door turbo. Cavalier was horrible & Cobalt not much better. Why not?

If you want a name that screams Korean even louder, how about Chevrolet Nubira. (Nubira means "go anywhere" or "to go anywhere" in Korean... depending on the source, I don't speak Korean myself)

I would not put it past the boneheads at GM to choose that name, actually...

If they absolutely want to get rid of "Cobalt", I hope GM at least dumps Optra/Lacetti/Nubira forever and picks a new name.

Re: Chevrolet to drop «Cobalt» name

Is it possible that we might end up with the current Cobalt and its replacement on the market simultaneously?

That would give GM a capacity boost.

I would think it unlikely, but not unfeasible.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, is wrong with the Cobalt name.
You're breaking my balls, GM.

Exactly.

That post sums up the thread completely.

I wonder how many pages of complaining we'll get, though. Maybe we could get the execs at GM to read this (I'm pretty sure they already visit GMI once in a while to take the pulse of GM fans FWIW) if the thread gets long enough.

But the cobalt does have a colt following of it own. And its growing every year. If this turns out to be true, this would be a bad move on GM's part.

True, that... I can even name a person that is part of that cult following. He's a GMI member.

And he's probably going to have to change his username to "NubiraSSCrazy" soon.

Re: Chevrolet to drop «Cobalt» name

The Cobalt name was ok, better than Cavelier, so if they do replace the name I hope its with something from Chevy's past, like Nova. That would be awesome. Just no more names like Aveo please!

Thumbs up Re: Chevrolet to drop «Cobalt» name

Nova would be the perfect name.
