Re: Chevrolet to drop «Cobalt» name

If it's a global car, Nova might be a reasonable choice, given that it sold well worldwide. Otherwise, there's no incentive I can think of to drop the Cobalt moniker.

Why not just name it Cobalt for all markets? Aveo, Colorado and HHR are already pretty "global", so it's not like it can't be done.

Yes, the name would be new in some markets, but so would ANY other new or existing name they can think of, as there currently is no Chevy compact sold worldwide with one name.

I see no point in doing this and don't see how this will help.

Angry Re: Chevrolet to drop «Cobalt» name

This is GM’s over-confidence in its market place arrogance and incompetence at its finest. Continue with "Colbat" name. If anything GM, the “Aveo” should have been the “Spectrum” or the "Chevette", the upcoming model based on the WTCC concept should be the “Storm”, the "Groove" and the "Beat" ala the "Bel Air" and "Prism", respectively, and the “Trax” should be the “Tracker”. Name recognition is pricelss.

They could call it "Cavalier". Lots of brand equity there. Or how about "Vega"? Maybe "Chevette" would be best. Yeah, "Chevette", I like the sound of that....

Re: Chevrolet to drop «Cobalt» name

I'm sure this has already been pointed out but the article does not confirm that the Cobalt name will be dropped. It's mere speculation on the part of the author.

Re: Chevrolet to drop «Cobalt» name

As far as I remember, neither Cobalt nor Cavalier were very popular car names among GMI readers, and personally I don't like that name at all, so I don't really see any reason for such a public outcry. Make a good car and name it Chevrolet Popcorn, I'd still buy it.

I wonder what are the chances of Astra?

Huh, they're pulling a Ford.

"Ford Taurus. Nope! Ford Five Hundred. Wait! Back to Ford Taurus!"

Just another way to confuse consumers.

After seeing the picture, that car doesn't look like it deserves the NOVA name.

agreed. Nothing wrong with the name, car, or advertising.

Maybe we could take a page from VW and name it the Chevrolet Bunny

If anything it will make the 2007 G85 Cobalt SS Supercharged much more desired and rare with the LSD and Recaro's on top of the 09 Cobalt SS Turbocharged and its ultralux seating on top of the best chassis sport compact in 08/09 with amazing power. The electronic performance display on those will be saw-eet also!

CobaltSS

After Cobalt SS, I probably won't be buying another compact. ever. Alpha Cadillac or used Gen 2 CTS-V (coupe if single, sedan if married) based on GM's current portfolio may be my next vehicle.

Thank you for being a geek.

The Cobalt name should be retained. If they kept Malibu, they should keep Cobalt.
