Buick Verano, Chevy Cruze & Sonic Recalled for Airbag Issue

General Motors has issued a recall for three of its vehicles, the 2012 Buick Verano and the 2012 Chevy Cruze and Sonic, for an issue with the driver’s airbag.

In the case of a collision, the primary stage of the driver’s side airbag may not deploy, which can lead to serious injury or death. So far, the recall is only out on 500 vehicles north of the border in Canada, but will likely spread to the U.S. sometime soon.

Dealers will replace the airbag coil in the affected vehicles free of charge to the consumer.

Got the call today that just yesterday a friend of mine was riding as a passenger with his boss in a Chevy Cruze that had a pickup truck pull out in front of them on a 50mph highway and stop dead. He said they had about 25 feet to stop but of course hit the truck at a good clip. The Cruze was totaled. "Airbags were everywhere" he said in the impact, and both of them walked away with just minor bruises and sore today, and they went to work. He credits the Cruze with saving their lives, and is now looking to trade in his Honda Civic on a new Malibu. Although my friend is a bit prone to hyperbole, he said he thinks if they were in his Civic he would have been decapitated!
