Chevrolet's hard at work on the new for '14 SS sedan's next evolution; it's expected sooner rather than later. Price and details aren't known, but big upgrades for the next LS3-powered SS are set.
Look for a manual transmission and GM's Magnetic Ride Control suspension. We hear the manual SS arrives this summer as a 2015, with a $2,000-$3,000 premium over today's automatic-only $44,470 sticker.
I'd say they dialed back expectations considerably, if Chevrolet is willing to call 1700 units a year a "success". I'd call 1700 units more of a hassle or an annoyance, because it's such a small number of vehicles for Chevrolet's national franchise to have to be prepared to service.
Most of the technology and mechanical components are already serviced by GM dealerships. This is a halo car…always has been. Even for Pontiac. Remember sales volumes are driven by total production of the Holden and Chevy vehicles. It cost GM very little money to produce an SS - as it is only minor differences from the Holden counterpart.
1700 units per year would be about the same sales as the G8 GXP (which had a manual). Not sure what folks expected -- especially in a very crowded Chevy showroom.
Rear wheel drive and a manual transmission in a rigid, good-handling sedan is what I will buy. Now if you could offer a smaller engine? Your turbocharged 4-cylinder in the Malibu puts out 259 horsepower, so maybe it could be offered in the SS.
You can get that engine tuned to 270 hp with a 6 speed manual, RWD, and a rigid chassis right now in the Cadillac ATS. It would not be a good fit for the Chevy SS.
It's almost surreal to me that we spend so much energy discussing a car which GM projects will only sell in the 1000-2000 units range and which is ultimately marked for death shortly.
Really? I guess I hadn't seen the latest sales data - but that would equate to over 400/month and I didn't remember seeing those numbers. Granted - I am one of the buyers that wants one terribly…but won't buy an automatic.
Chevrolet would have a better chance of selling this car to BMW owners, looking at the BMW forums they seem to have a much more favorable view to the car than Pontiac or other GM owners. The only thing that BMW owners dont like is the Chevy badge, easily fixed if Chevrolet/GM can have Holden badging as an option .
I am picking a new black SS tomorrow -- one of the dealers in Omaha (not the one I am buying from) has a SS marked up by 5K. They are nuts for asking that for the SS. However, that is just one of the Chevy dealers in the area.
I driven quite a few VE Commodores aka G8 and I've driven just about every Holden version of the VF and the difference between the 2 in ride, handling, steering is amazing not too mention the interior the VF is miles in front. I can see where people with G8's might be baulking at buying an SS but after driving both Commodore versions I know which one I'd rather have in my drive way.
I haven't driven a HSV so I comment on the drive line differences between a G8 and an SS but on VF the drive line is an improvement, the clutch feels better the gearbox seems to shift better.
