Corvette's still have a clam shell hood (front hinged) but they don't have the flip front end of the C4.

The Solstice and Sky's hoods were clamshell type. I pretty sure that the hydroforming that GM is doing right now is allowing them to make such things for a cheaper price.

And why oh why do auto companies try to shove a hybrid into every single type of car possible?!?! Is it possible to get a honest to goodness sports car without all this "Hybrid" gimmickry?

The hoods on the Solstice/Sky are just like the Viper and C4 Corvette, in that the fender splits on the side, and you can access the suspension and all of the front of the car with the hood flipped open. I own a Viper GTS, and the earlier costs given are correct, the Viper hood is $12,000. I clearly remember GM saying the C5 Vette lost the clamshell style hood because of cost, and Dodge did the same thing for the Viper in 2003. They also went to a traditional hood that was front hinged. Clearly, GM is now able to do them low cost...

Re: 50th Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept Official Details

I wouldn't mind seeing a return to the clamshell hood,(a clamshell is one that folds down over the sides, not just front hinged) however if they do it I hope they can find a way to eliminate the vibrations in them. Both my '94 Vette and Sky Redline had it on the drivers side. I think it was due to wind more than anything else, but it was distracting none the less. I especially loved the one on the Vette because it eliminated another unsitely cut line and made the car look more like it was made from one piece.

To me a clam shell hood is one that is front hinged, like the Vette and certain Buicks and Oldsmobiles from the '90s along with dozens of other cars. And the C4 had a lift front, but after some more interweb searching, I might have been wrong all these yars.

Yuck. The real vette's 1000x nicer. The only thing they forgot to tack on was a set of '59 Caddy tailfins.

This backward looking design has got to stop. This is out of hand.

Chevrolet Releases 50th Anniversary Corvette Stingray Concept... Again

Also referred to as the Corvette Centennial, the show car debuted at the Chicago Auto Show this past February, and had a cameo as Sideswipe in the latest Transformers sequel, Revenge of the Fallen. Now several months later, General Motors has hit us again with a fresh batch of photos and a brief press release (posted after the jump) conspicuously short on details, only hinting that something's changed by stating that "a version of the model" previously debuted in Chicago, but saying little else. Do we care? Not really. Because rationale aside, the Stingray is pretty badass, as you can see from the photos in the gallery below. So let's throw reason out the window and enjoy.

PRESS RELEASE:

50th Anniversary Corvette Stingray Concept
Design and technology come together to celebrate Corvette's past, present and future

October 30, 2009

DETROIT – Chevrolet delivers a futuristic vision of technology and design with the 50th Anniversary Corvette Stingray Concept. A version of the model was first shown at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show and stars as "Sideswipe" in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The Corvette Stingray Concept represents both the iconic legacy and an exciting future for Corvette.

The Corvette Stingray Concept was developed as an internal design challenge to combine classic Corvette cues with surprisingly high-tech features, modern materials, and a striking new appearance. The car is well-appointed with a clamshell hood, scissor-style doors, ergonomic seats, rear-view camera with night vision enhancement, and a high performance hybrid drive. Interactive touch controls allow the driver to customize the power and efficiency of his or her ride and share it with friends via the in-car camera system and advanced telemetrics.
