50th Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept Official Details

Quote:
General Motors has given us a futuristic vision of technology and design with the 50th Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept. Celebrating 50 years since the debut of the original Corvette Stingray Racer Concept in 1959, the latest addition to GM’s long line of stylistic show cars was first displayed at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show before it starred as “Sideswipe” in the movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

The overall idea of the 50th Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept was to incorporate past design cues in a fully futuristic shape. Speaking specifically about the car, Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design, said: "By giving my creative team the freedom to design no-holds-barred vision concepts, it helps them push boundaries and look at projects from different perspectives."

The 50th Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept is at this point solely a design exercise, not foreshadowing a production vehicle, though talk of the upcoming C7 Corvette has been circulating for some time.

Some of the concept’s features we could envisage making into a production Corvette one day include its clamshell hood, scissor-style doors, ergonomic seats, rear-view camera with night vision enhancement, and a high performance hybrid powertrain.

This latter element comes with interactive touch controls inside the cabin to allow the driver to customize the power and efficiency of the car and then share it with friends via an in-car camera system and advanced telemetrics.

For a full run-down of the potential hybrid and other powertrain options for the next-gen Corvette, check out John Voelcker's article over at Green Car Reports.

Pretty cool. I can't wait to see what the C7 will look like.

I love this Stingray and hope that the C7 looks VERY close to it, though perhaps with the rear end "toned down" in the sense of having 4 separate tail lamps, and with normal vs. scissors doors so as to be more producible.

The interior is amazing in this car. Hope a lot of it makes it to a production Corvette.

I didn't like this concept at first, but the more I see it, the more I like it. I still think the eggcrate grille on the lower front looks a little silly and they could do somthing better there.

Just make this the C7 already.

I suspect that production sized headlights, mirrors and wheels, together with impact-worthy door hinges, front and rear bumpers are all that separates this from the C7.

Ed Welburn and his team are absolutely amazing. I am so pleased that GM Design has stopped design by committee. I'm so pleased that they use more expressive designs that kinda make you step back when first you peer at them. This Stingray is no exception.

People on this site had a love-hate response to the CTS Coupe Concept at first, as did they to a lesser extent with the Converg. Next up is this concept. I absolutely love them all, and if all are brought to market in a relatively unadulterated state, I predict not a single one would require incentives to get off the lot, not a single one would be without a waiting list, and GM would essentially be minting money when they produce them.

A job fantastically well done, Welburn et al.. Simply gorgeous!

I believe that's from the mid-60's Mako Shark show car. It won't be as prominent in real life because it's so near the ground.

that is an interseting paragraph. looks like thats how they would mitigate rear view issues with the split rear window and hybrid powertrain would be interesting.

Well said.....GM wore the crown in the 1950s and 60s in part due to very expressive styling that others copied, like when Mercedes lamely tried to copy fins and stacked headlights. Time to lead again GM!

and this. Everything else is great! Just take it easy with the front and back ends there... The C7 needs not go into gaudy bat-mobile territory. Sometimes a line needs to be drawn in between revolutionary and tacky. I guess I'll add I think the pop up headlights need to be brought back. I don't care much for these.. And the car also needs to be scaled down is size a bit. In some of those pics that car is just plain huge! Far too wide and just bulky all around.

Re: 50th Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept Official Details

GM will never go back to the clam shell hood as it add great cost to the corvette. the C-4 hood cost over $4K and the viper hood cost over $12K. when i got my 97 C-5 the insurance was cheaper than the C-4 because of things like bolt on fenders and no clam shell hood. GM worked with the insurance companies while designing to make sure that the C-5 corvette would not break the owners bank just for insurance

Re: 50th Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept Official Details

When I saw this Concept a few months ago and there was speculation that it was the upcoming C7, while I don't particularly like it, I dubbed it the Stingray or Mako Shark! Either name would be appropriate as the car does owe some of its styling cues to the Stingray of the 1960's.

The more I see it the more I wonder what the Cadillac version would have looked like?

As long as they don't put something like Acura's shield grill
