2017 Will Be The End Of The Line For The Chevrolet SS

    JAN 9, 2017 | BY MICHAEL KARKAFIRIS

The Chevrolet SS, one of the most honest and talented four-door models of the market, is apparently heading to its extinction this year.

The confirmation came from Alan Batey, President of GM North America according to WardsAuto.

It will be a sad day when the SS seizes to exist but we all knew that this was approaching fast; the slow sales didn’t help the SS but to be fair, Chevrolet didn’t do much to promote it either.

Essentially the left-hand drive version of the Holden Commodore, the Chevrolet SS was praised by many, but bought by too few. Many people and the press saw a true spiritual successor of the E39 M5 in the SS, and that means a lot to the right ears.

It was also offered with a six-speed manual gearbox as well, but these days no one is really looking to buy a thirsty V8-powered four-door that demands you do the work of shifting.

Let’s not forget that GM is also shutting down Holden’s production in Australia anyway, so even if the SS was a market hit, its days would still be numbered.

Don't worry - the new Kia Stinger will take it's place - the platform is shared with the Hyundai Genesis but it's not clear if the Stinger will get the V8 - as well as an I4 and V6.

It's going to interesting to watch the sales numbers of the properly marketed Kia Stinger in comparison to the Chevrolet SS.

Since the Stinger is based on the same platform as the K9 and Equus, there's already room for 5.0 V8 engine.

Hopefully when the Alpha II platform comes out, there'll be a spiritual successor for the SS (Impala?). Maybe even something for Buick and Holden.

Not a surprise, which is why I got mine when I did. Can't see trading it for anything else to daily for a long, long time.

Re: 2017 Will Be The End Of The Line For The Chevrolet SS

We all knew this was coming in 2017.

I couldn't cough up the cash for a $50k SS with the old tech LS3 in an essentially updated Pontiac G8 GT package. I'm happy I kept my 09 G8 GT and purchased a 2014 Vette instead. Our G8 currently has 90,000 miles and remains our year round daily driver(it's a hoot in the snow!) but sooner or later it will need a replacement. Will GM offer anything reasonably priced?

Will Alpha II be RHD-capable - Holden need that.

Been finding some deals lately on them, talented car indeed, I wish GM would rethink the SS, and Commie on a Alpha II platform, but I think it will never happen.

If it was going to happen we'd know about it - and they wouldn't have badged the Insignia Grand Sport as Commodore for Holden.

I was honestly thinking the FWD Impala, and the Insignia both where place holders kind of like the the XTS was for Cadillac until a proper sedan was to be built to replace the Commie, and FWD Impala/RWD SS, some sort of temporary fix. That was my dream anyway.

GM went 18 years between rear drive V8 sedans (excepting CTS-V's and the unloved Sigma STS), I don't see them doing another anytime soon.

I'd like to see GM offer an attractive RWD sedan starting in the low $30's with a solid V6, mid 30's for a base V8 and low 40's for a true performance V8, essentially a long wheel base Camaro. The new Kia Stinger looks to be the closest option in the near future or opt for the ancient Mopar's which do not interest me whatsoever.
