2013 Chevy Malibu 2.5L GM Est MPG: 22/34. Verano 2.0t MT EPA Rated: 20/31

The August issue of Motor Trend carries a nice (though short) article on the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu 2.5L model.

    Here is an interesting quote:

"Though not yet EPA rated, Chevrolet predicts 22mpg city, 34 mpg highway, which falls short of the new Altima's impressive 27/38 mpg."

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

From the EPA comes an official rating for the new 2013 Buick Verano 2.0t manual transmission model:

    "2013 Buick Verano 2.0 L, 4 cyl, Manual 6-spd, Regular Gasoline; 20 City, 31 Highway"

Note: The 2013 Buick Regal 2.0t-MT is rated slightly higher at 20/32.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ford has estimated MPG ratings for the new line of Fusion models as follows:

    2.5-liter iVCT four-cylinder:
Anticipated 22 mpg city, 33 mpg highway

    1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder:
Anticipated 26 mpg city, 37 mpg highway

    2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder:
Anticipated 23 mpg city, 33 mpg highway

Did you know? Fusion’s expected fuel efficiency of up to 37 mpg highway when equipped with the EcoBoost 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine matches the Chevrolet Malibu mild hybrid and bests competing four-cylinder offerings from both Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. And Fusion has
    more interior space than Camry.

The 2.5L Malibu seems -at this point- to be a little behind the competition.

Let's hope the official EPA ratings are more generous.

Aerodynamics play a part in the Verano rating. My Saab 9-5 has virtually the same powertrain (2.0t + F85) and is rated at 20/33.

Sadly, it appears this generation of Malibu is failing to stand up to the competition on a number of levels. Very unfortunate!

I still don't know about the Altima. I think we're really gonna have to see real world fuel economy for it before I form an opinion on it. But really it's the lightest in the segment and has that new cvt, so it's not really surprising it has such high numbers.
Are it's ratings official yet or are they still estimates?

Fail. They designed a new I4, bragged about how great it is (it is pretty powerful), and yet they failed to MATCH the competition? Why anyone would buy the new Malibu in ANY variant is beyond me. The Malibu Turbo will hopefully push people to it, but I do have doubts about that.

Well the Malibu is over 400 pounds heavier than the Altima and has 15 more horsepower folks !!!! I notice that the Japanese and Koren competition is so much lighter than GM cars. I could tell you that my Cruze is 400 pounds heavier than the Civic, the Corolla and the Elantra and my car feels so much more substantial in addition to being quieter and smoother. Plus the Cruze's interior looks and feels better than those cars. I drove all of them at a GM test drive event last year and the Cruze felt superior. I know the Elantra's exterior has gotten alot of attention, I think it looks cheap and gimmicky, the Cruze has a classy look to it that will look good for years. What do you all think ?

The Altima beats every midsized car by a lot.

GM has never said the 2.5 was going to be super fuel efficient but it was going to be smooth and powerful.

Let's not forget the Cruze, Malibu (and Spark) come equipped with 10 airbags...standard.

I would buy the Malibu just to avoid a CVT. Maybe I'm just too used to a regular auto but the CVTs just feel wrong to me. Also, to me the new Altima is uglier than the new Malibu.

The Malibu's ratings have nothing to do with the actual motor; it has to do with the weight of the car.

The competition isn't necessarily building a better car; it's just a lighter car.

Fuel economy is all about driving conditions and the drivers foot. A couple mpgs won't be even be realized in the Altima by someone with a heavy foot.

By comparison, the ATS with the 2.5L is 22/33.. Based on the Verano 2.0T, any projections of the ATS 2.0T?

The Malibu isn't great news, but it should end speculation in the Car Mags review of the Malibu Eco that somehow the eAssist will be redundant when the 2.5L is available. Still a ways from 25/37.

Don't people buy cars for other reasons than just gas milage? The way everyone is talking the only vehicle that anyone will buy is the Altima because it gets the best milage. Before everyone posts their "epic fail" comments maybe we should all wait and see what the market does and read actual reviews.

some car is always going to be last place fo FE in it's segment. So what. Okay it would be nice if it were tops, since were mostly GM fans and had the most HP but I don't care. Power does it over FE anyday, at least for me. That Verano Turbo is a bit lower then I would have thought...but then 250HP is a good trade off.

I just read Motor Trend's article on the Malibu 2.5, last night. Overall, a decent review of the Malibu with the 2.5 Ecotec, but my impression after reading the article is that the Malibu is not quite up to par with the competition. Don't get me wrong, I think this new generation Malibu is a nice automobile, but it appears that GM barely improved over the previous generation, while the competition made great strides over their previous generation midsize sedan. Specifically, I am referring to the Nissan Altima and the Ford Fusion.
