Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

My Father-in-law works at CAMI...he said that both the Terrain and Nox look 'miles better than the outgoing modles'

Just an FYI

Equinox will be fresh. At this point GM will probably be able to launch vehicles with a Two-Mode Hybrid version ready to go. And the Saturn VUE plug in is just around the corner supposedly, and there for an Nox is not out of the question.

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

These projects had been started long before the $4 a gallon gas. At the time it was what people wanted. Something a little bit smaller than their Tahoe or Explorer but with the ability to do the same duties. The new Traverse and Equinox are perfect for what they knew 1 year ago.

$4 a gallon has only been around a few months. NO manufacture could have been ready for it. The fact that GM is introducing better gas mileage products while toyota and honda have both recently introduced products that have gone down shows what company was better prepared.

The fact that GM was able to introduce the XFE Cobalt in just a few months goes to show how much better they have gotten. It might not be perfect but it was a great response to a market that changed very quickly. What other manufacture introduced such a product? None you say? You are right.

Trying to produce an all new car in less than 1 year is impossible for ANY car company. They are doing the right things with what has been handed to them.

The facts (with some opinion)
1. GM has increased gas mileage ratings on every product they have introduced in the past few years.
2. GM had a new small car program going before the $4 a gallon gas hit.
3. GM did screw up with the design of the Beat by not having it ready for the US. Every company & person has made misjudgements. Should someone's "balls" be held to the wall for this one? You bet. Does that mean they should be fired or the company should be condemed? No.
4. toyota & honda have introduced bigger more gas hungry cars the past 2 years. Examples; tundra, scion lineup, civic, accord, corolla, and almost every new toyota product introduced. ALL manufactures where going in the wrong direction short of BMW with Mini. toyota and honda have just been lucky enough to have an image of good gas mileage products that they no longer deserve.
5. 5 years ago even toyota and honda made little money on their cars compared to their SUVs. GM, Ford, toyota and honda are all in the business to make a profit. If a company doesn't make money on a certain type of product they don't put big money into it. It just makes financial sense. Yes GM and Ford made a long term mistake by not producing top notch cars. They made the most money the way they knew how. Had they not done that both might just not be here today.
6. GM has proven they can make the best cars out there when they want to; Malibu & CTS. Those that are rooting for GM can only hope that this will be a long term lesson learned for the company in that they will remember to never negect any part of the market they are in.

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

Shouldn't the Equinox target the CR-V, Rav4, Escape, Rogue rather than the Edge? Thats like saying its targeting the Murano, Highlander, Pilot. It just doesn't make sense. Prices are way different too!

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

The 2.3 ecotec is very interesting. That gives GM a 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4. Isn't that overkill, or will one of the other two go away?

One can only hope that a 2 mode would be available at launch. Guess is though 1-2yrs after release.

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

Escape is a odd truck, doesnt really fit into any segment. Taller then a CRV or Rav4, not sporty like a Murano or CX7, not as big as the Nox or Torrent or even the Edge.
I would not put that much stock into making a Escape fighter. If anything, maybe thats what GMC should have, a more truck like CUV while Chevy has the on road CUV with the Nox.

What the compact Chevy would be if they brought it over that is.

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

If the Equinox is going to grow a bit and still get close to 30 mpg I may delay trading my Malibu until it comes out (and enjoy having no car payments).

Adding DI does make the engine more efficient. The question then, is how you gear it, and how you set up the throttle. Set it up to be a performance car, mileage will drop. Set it up to be less peppy (or, as peppy as the lower-powered predecessor), you'll reap the efficiency gain.

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

I don't see the big deal with having the Edge in mind when developing the new Equinox? The Edge is a good size and GM, at the moment, does not have a vehicle that is Edge-sized. The target was to undercut the Edge on price as well, so really, I have a difficult time seeing a problem with it.

Bigger 'nox means the Grove or HHR replacement can fill in below.

Grove/HHR > Equinox > Traverse > Tahoe/Suburban

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

I would buy a 2.3L DI NOX that does those mileage numbers. Very nice.

This vehicle is badly needed as the current one is getting a bit dated.

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

I'll bet $50 that the 3.0 DI and VVT motor will crest about 250 horse. It won't hit 270.
If it does, that boasts SIGNIFICANT amounts of VE, peaking over 100% through much of the power band.

The grove was a car, the Trax was the crossover. The Trax was a sub compact crossover, not a compact so they would still have a spot in the lineup that was not filled. The HHR is more of a compact wagon, not a crossover.
