General Motors is adding to it's line of the "World's Best Powertrains" with the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 powertrain. The LS7 engine will be hand-built to perfection.

Recently GM opened its all new Performance Build Center. The Center is dedicated to building high-performance engines for low-volume, premium vehicles. The first engine to be built at the new facility is the new LS7 OHV Small-Block V8 that will be used exclusively for the new 2006 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6.

The new Build-Center is located in Wixom, Mich. and is 100,000 sq. ft in size. Specially trained technicians build each engine from start to finish. The facility will be capable of producing up to 15,000 powertrains annually with highly flexible 'mix' that can respond quick to changing market conditions. Every engine that the plant builds will be hot-tested.

Details on the new LS7 powertrain will be released at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in January.

There's nothing quite like hand-built precision from expert craftsmen. When you ask this much out of a (relatively) low-tech pushrod V8, you'd better make **************** sure it's perfect. Good enough won't be.

Hardly low tech. High tech is the answer.

I wonder if all the engines will have a signature from the one who built it.

very cool. what other engines with be in GMs world class powertrains portfolio? The world re-nounced 185hP engine to go into the extremey sporty Torrent? The 200HP "sporty" G6 engine?I can just see it now; "Hey mom, look! Its that wanna-be cheaper Porsche Cayenne cheaply brand engineered from a Chevrolet Equinox!"

Also, NSAP, whered did u get this info? How much HP will it have? I'd bet 450, but I have no idea. Did it come from a high classified interview that many of us GM afficiandos or w.e would enjoy browsing through? And while I'm here asking, does anyone know for sure if zeta and kappa will be able to be high enough volume to do anything more than make a couple niche cars? Will it have a total annual sales volume tha would resemle something between a bmw 3 and toyota camry?

Sure a hand built engine is pretty swanky, but how much will the Z06 Cost!

Hand built awesome. That will definetly put exotics in there place last place that is. Very promising from GM and surprizing. Hopefully GM follow this trend of better Quality products.

I have a bad feeling this will increase the Z06's price dramatically, atleast $63,000 to start.........Why do the engines have to be hand built?

If so, hopefully this will mean some healthy profits for GM from this effort, they deserve it. Z06 is gonna rock!

Re: 2006 ZO6 Engine To Be Hand-Built

I thought I read something way back that the LS7 was to be a multi-valver (3 if I remember correctly) and possibly an SOHC or DOHC. Did they change their minds and go with the 2-valve pushrods? Or is this the new multi-valve pushrod engine I've been hearing rumors about?

Just wondering.

My favorite car is the Dodge Viper, better than the Ford GT simply 'cause I can buy 2 Vipers for 1 GT, and it can hold its own against the GT. Looks like the Viper Team at Chrysler better resoind quick. Ford has already answered with the retro GT. And now GM is breathing down Dodge's neck, with what looks like a smaller pushrod engine with 2 less cylinders producing the same target horsepower.

Big, bulky, raw muscle from the 500 cubes V10 doesn't look like it's gonna cut it much longer. Viper, still my favorite car, always.
