GMI Drives: Holden Captiva 7 LS

As manufacturers look at new ways to make their SUVs seem new and exciting, Holdens Captiva 7 makes do with solid but aging foundations.

    The Good:
Torque from the 2.2 Turbo Diesel dwarfs others in this price range
    Still a really good size
Electric Handbrake and Remote Central locking are useful
Entry price of $32,990 is very good for a diesel 7 seater

    The Bad:
Looks are getting a bit dowdy
    Interior lacks flair and technology
    Too many beeps
    Auto-lock locks when refueling

You can see more pics of our time with the Holden Captiva 7 LS, right here: #INSTAFUNBUS

Actually, in this market, a decent sized 7 seater is hard to get for under 35k. It definitely needs a massive update and I don't know why they didn't throw Mylink (and at least a rvc in the mirror) in the mix, but there is still need for. 7 seats at this end of the market.

    Expensive?

It's dirt cheap for a seven seater

Maybe the run-out pricing puts the Holden Captiva in a lower price class than the Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 diesel which has 436 Nm torque compared to the Captiva's 400 Nm.

    Run out Pricing?

I wasn't aware the new model was due

The fact is they can price it cheaper because it's paid for itself 10 times over and the Hyundais ect ect are way overpriced

As China said you can push a Santa Fe over 50 grand with the Diesel with no effort at all

Yes, as China has pointed out, the Santa Fe is far more expensive. Just on list price, the Captiva 7 is 32,990 vs the base Santa Fe Manual at 40,990. The Kia Sorrento is also available at 39,990 as a manual. 32,990 is list price, not a promotional "run-out" price.

Personally, I wouldn't buy either because i still want to be a hot dad.

even in the US market 32K for a 7 seater is not un reasonable if you rule out vans
a toyota VENZA if 27K and a traverse is 30K

But the US market generally requires a bigger, ie more expensive, vehicle to get 7-seats in - Europe and Australia are happy with mid-size 7-seat SUVs which are only sold in their 5-seat versions in the US.

Whilst I think the Santa Fe is better than a Captiva or Opel/Vauxhall Antara, I couldn't possibly try to justify that big a price difference.

    Great Review Mik!

While it's not my cup of tea, my grandson loves the Chevy 5 seat version sold for fleet duty here in the US. No matter what friend, relative or neighbor is riding with us, I always get the question "What's a Captiva?" if we see one on the road. I'll have to save your review for them.

Re: GMI Drives: Holden Captiva 7 LS

Thanks XP300. I have a run in the Captiva 5 LTZ in the coming weeks too. Although it's surprising for an old vehicle to do so well in such a crowded segment, is a solid effort. It's interesting the way my opinion of it changed as time went by. At first I was not a fan, then I appreciated what it could do, then I got bored..... then I went for a drive in the forestry roads and missed not having a proper hand brake....

All in all though, not my cup of tea either but I can see why people like them.
