XM & Sirius to Announce Merger

HEAVENLY DEAL
SIRIUS, XM SET TO CONFIRM MERGER PLAN TODAY
By PETER LAURIA

February 19, 2007 -- Satellite radio operators Sirius and XM are expected to announce their long-awaited merger today, according to a source familiar with the deal.

The two sides were locked in negotiations over the weekend trying to hammer out a final agreement with an eye toward going public with the merger today in Washington, D.C., where XM is based, this source said.

Talks were still going on at press time and the deal could fall apart at any time. With antitrust issues of paramount importance, this source said lawyers for both companies were working overtime to fine-tune the language of the agreement and frame the discussion around the deal itself and not regulatory concerns.

8 track versus cassette...

Betamax versus VHS...

XM versus Sirius...

It was only a matter of time...

As long as they put Nascar Radio back on XM, and don't raise rates. I am all for it.

Re: XM & Sirius to Announce Merger

sounds like a win win for everyone as long as the "monopoly" factor doesn't raise the rates to where they loose patronage.Does this mean the equipment will have to be updated or is it a software issue with the broadcast equipment?

The merger may allow the prices to come down. XM is already come down in cost from the factory. I believe it's only a $199 option where it was at $300 before.

OK, so Stern brought over 6 million subscribers to a service that barely had 600,000 subscribers. In 1 year.

Yeah, big ripoff.

If it wasn't for Stern, we'd be reading that XM is buying what remains of Sirius, now Sirius is the one holding all the cards.

You need to stop listening to what he is spewing....because it ain't fact.

When did Stern sign? 2004? If you think it was JUST STERN that brought in all those subscribers then you're dreaming.

Re: XM & Sirius to Announce Merger

Babbabboooeeeyyy! And for those who don't know when Stern came to Sirius(in the previous post with the graph) He made an announcement on Oct, 6th he didn't start with Sirius until 1/9/06. The huge growth (shown in the graph) is at the end of '05 first of '06, which is when he switched. The reason there wasn't a huge growth in '04 to '05 even though the announcement was made is because he could be heard on regular radio. How come Sirius was like the red head step child of Satellite Radio until Stern came on board? NOBODY chose Sirius over XM until Stern came on board, then NASCAR came. Sirius now offers a better package, but Stern got the ball rolling. Chris

When Stern was signed they had less then 3 million subscribers now they are over 6 million. How is that a ripoff? 3 million x $12.95 every month.
