XM Service Degradation

I was noticing how bad my XM radio faded in and out last night. I blamed it on the unit in my car. This morning I took the truck and had the same problems.

I checked my email.
Service Degradation Alert

You may be experiencing temporary degraded performance with your XM reception at the present time. XM is aware of the issue and working diligently to resolve it as soon as possible. We anticipate full signal strength will be restored by early Tuesday morning.

How bad is it for you?

Re: XM Degradation

Thanks for posting this. I absolutely noticed it yesterday and this morning (actually reverted to listening to a CD in my car this morning), but I hadn't looked into it.

That reminds me, my subscription ran out last month but they haven't cut me off yet. I'd better renew soon before all I have is Channel 1.

Re: XM Degradation

Thanks for posting this! I was ticked this morning on my way to work when XM would cut out constantly.

Mine was bad on the weekend and still bad on my way to work this morning at 5:30am EDT... it would fade out if I drove under tree cover. I've only had the service since December, so I'm relieved to find out this isn't due to the leaves coming out, LOL.

Re: XM Degradation

XM is only operating on Satellite 2 right now. Satellite 1 and all the repeaters have been knocked offline due to a botched software update. They say it'll be restored by midday today now.

From my understanding, XM automatically renews for another year after your initial subscription ends unless you call them.

Re: XM Degradation

Good to know. I thought it was just a problem with my unit, which I've only had installed for about a week now.

Re: XM Degradation

The main problem with XM is all of the commercials, even though most of them, at least for now, are for other stations on XM. If they have to double the fee to get rid of all commercials, including using tape delay to take them out of the news programs, then double it. The USA is drowning in commercials / ads everywhere.

I think they tried that, but they have no way of doing that for me. The credit card I have on file isn't current. I was notified over a month ago, but I've just been putting it off, and so far nothing's happened. Last time I renewed was April 2005 for a two-year agreement. I'm thinking of going with another two-year agreement, but Buick61's got me curious how he got the screamin' 4.99/mth deal (see his GMI thread elsewhere).

WHY do so many people think this about XM?!!????!?

XM has four music channels which are controlled by Clear Channel. They run commercials (against XM's will); the other ~70 do not. The live talk shows also have them, just like they do on Sirius or any other media outlet. Many of them are simulcast on terrestrial radio, so they have to play *something* when all the other stations go to a commercial break. Plus the DJs need a break to get coffee, take a leak, etc.

That said, I switched to Sirius because I wasn't happy with XM. They certainly have their faults, but running commercials is not one of them.

THANK YOU
I simply do not listen to those channels, they have others just like them w/o commercials!!

Thanks for the info. I got the email before I noticed the problems. As long as it doesnt go on too long I'm fine with it, seems to be better now already.
