UOIT to be a beacon in the auto industry
GM research and development centre planned for Oshawa's university, says school president

Sep 17, 2004
By Lesley Bovie

OSHAWA - Engineering students at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) in Oshawa may soon be in on the design and testing of new GM vehicles.

Negotiations are underway among GM, the federal and provincial governments and UOIT for a $58-million automotive research and development centre on campus, said university president Gary Polonsky.

......GM officials wouldn't confirm details but said the centre is just a small component of the Beacon Project, a $2-billion investment GM Canada has planned for research and development and overhauling plants in Canada.

That's great. That University is growing VERY quickly. Some of the drawings of the rest of the school yet to be built looks awesome!

Oshawa should have had a University YEARS ago, now that we have one look how quickly it's growing!

I like to hear about longterm investments like these. I'm a strong proponent of building good relationships with colleges and universities; the longterm, practical implications of alliances with those in academic research are innumerable. Of course, I'm biased, but good for GM. And good for students and faculty at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

OMG I am currently attending Durham College, which is the same campus! This is so awsome to see GM investing in a universtiy here in Oshawa. Hopefully before I gradute I get to see and use this building. This campus has exploeded in growth in the last two years.

I started with engineering at Carleton. Now I wish I was at UOIT taking engineering . Oh well, hopefully economics will get me a good enough job so I can afford the car I want.
