University of Wisconsin creates first diesel-hybrid SUV

http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/06/09/hybrid_diesel_suv/

May not be the first Diesel-Hybrid, but interesting news all the same.

And they used a Equinox as the mule, so thought it was a tad relevant.

Strider.

May not be the first diesel hybrid, but a working example like this is great. A lot better mileage than the Equinox gets now...

Unfortunately the article didn't tell us what kind of mileage and range it gets versus the Gasoline Equinox,

Re: University of Wisconsin creates first diesel-hybrid SUV

The creators of the vehicle, named "Moovada," claim that the new powertrain increases the Equinox' fuel efficiency by more than 50% to about 35 mpg, up from 15-20mpg.

I can't say I am impressed. That is lower mileage than a Camry hybrid, which also seats 5, and is marginally better than an Escape hybrid.

Nonetheless, if people are going to be driving them, 35 mpg sure is better than 15.

It is certainly impressive for an SUV hybrid. I wouldn't go comparing a sedan to an SUV when it comes to fuel economy. Perhaps a station wagon since most modern SUVs rarely go off road, but still...

This IS good to hear, but with the new diesel fuel coming out, you just have to wonder if it will be able to burn it or not?

They have a 2.9 V6 diesel engine in the pipeline when the low sulfur fuels comeout. They could EASILY stick it in the nox.

Actually, they are not the first. Penn State was. A friend of mine was part of a program sponsored by Ford. They built an Explorer diesel-hybrid .

All diesels can burn the new USLD that is just now hitting the pipeline. It is only the new diesels that canot burn the old diesel.
