UAW local members strike at GM Lansing plant

Members of United Auto Workers Local 602 went on strike Thursday at General Motors Corp assembly plant that makes fast-selling crossover vehicles, the company and union said.

We are disappointed that UAW Local 602 has taken strike action at the Lansing Delta Township plant,'' GM spokesman Dan Flores said.

The UAW represented supplier goes on strike before the UAW represented manufacturing plant members can!

Now instead of strike benefits, the GM workers will be 80% pay due to the fact that their union brothers beat them to the picket line.

GM and the local bargaining unit members have been trying to reach an agreement on contract details for the facility for several months following the national agreement reached between the automaker and the UAW last September.

doesn't provide the details.

Did GM renege on promises made during the national talks? If so, shame on GM; you get what you deserve. And it would make perfect sense to strike at Lansing. If the Union is not abiding by the agreement, if they're being needlessly difficult, then shame on the UAW.

Yeah, and I didn't see any explanation on the uaw.com web site either, at least not yet.

The UAW employees at Lansing Delta Township will be the first to whine when someday their plant is passed over for future or refreshed product.

GM plants have to abide by the National agreement and they also work out a local agreement that is more specific to the jobs in that plant. I believe that they have been unable to work out the local agreement yet. They are working without one and they finally decided to strike. I have no idea what the specific issues are in the local agreement are that they can't agree on.

Sad day. The return to profitability is the #1 priority. I hope this gets straightened out soon.

I am going to the union hall shortly,I will explain why we went on strike later. GM has been dragging their heels on a local contract for 7 months now. Sadly someone has to draw a line in the sand.

My guess is it's got to do with the # of non-core jobs and how they are transistioned out of by the senior members that currently have them. every local is dealing with this right now. Add to this that most local elections are scheduled to occur at the same time.

I sure hope they have a good reason for going on strike. Whatever world they are living in, they do not seem to realize that the competition is not hampered by union workers (local govt with those factories assured that). With that being said, is it there intent to do whatever they can (unions) to drive the auto industry out of this country. The car companies do share some blame on this but one day this industry is going to come close to a total shut down with just the non union plants still in business. The american public does not care where their cars come from just as long as it is affordable. It is not 1950, 60, 70, 80, or 90's times have changed and everybody in this industry better find a good common ground. I do not feel sympathy for anyone who thinks they are owed a high paying job just because, times change wake up or be jobless.

I'd be interested in your feedback, mostly from a "just plain curious" perspective. It's hard to castigate either side without specifics, though I'm sure both sides will see some ire directed toward them before we get more information.

I've been haring for 2 (TWO) years now here how the economy is in the toilet and it's not the first time you have made this statement either. I didn't see the memo that states you have to take it up the keester because the economy is in the toilet. I wonder if the faultering economy was planned so the rich fat cows could drive down wages even more. They sure are having fun with gold and oil now . GM and many other big corporations have been laying on the doom and gloom story quite a bit while their board members and top management have been reaping it in. I think it's an ideal time for the UAW to bring the ship to its knees so that maybe management will look in the mirror. I doubt it and I figure the ship will sink and all the muppets will blame the UAW.
