Torching car costly

http://winnipegsun.com/News/Winnipeg...14826-sun.html

A Winnipeg man who torched his 2002 Ford Mustang when he had trouble meeting his lease payments is probably wishing he sucked it up after a court ordered him to pay more than $26,000 to replace the vehicle.

Danny Dimko Atanasovic, 22, pleaded guilty in court last week to one count of fraud.

"Boy, did you make a mess for yourself," said Judge Sid Lerner, who also fined Atanasovic $1,200.

LENGTHY INVESTIGATION

"Not only did you not accomplish what you wanted to financially, you accomplished the reverse -- your financial obligations have now increased exponentially."

Court heard Atanasovic, then 19, and a friend drove the car to a remote location near Marquette where they set it on fire. Atanasovic then called RCMP and reported the vehicle stolen.

Manitoba Public Insurance, aware Atanasovic was having trouble meeting his $556 monthly lease payments, launched a lengthy investigation, and he was eventually arrested. For at least part of that time, Atanasovic continued to make lease payments on the vehicle, court was told.

"He is as graphic an illustration as you can get of the old maxim that crime does not pay," said defence lawyer John McAmmond.

The Crown agreed to drop a charge of arson so Atanasovic, a father of two, could keep his job with a Winnipeg car dealership.

"He's clearly guilty of the arson ... The Crown is giving the gentleman a break," said Crown attorney Mike Mahon.

John Douglas, MPI vice-president of public and corporate affairs, said potential fraudsters should know the courts are taking automobile fraud more seriously than in the past.

Thats just sad, he's in a worse situation than before. This should teach anyone to not buy more than they can afford.

Like a $100-200/month raise to help with his lease payments? Or $26000 to pay his fine?
