Toledo Builds 2 Millionth RWD6 Transmission

    January 7, 2012

Just 21 months after building the 1 millionth rear-wheel-drive six-speed transmission, Toledo Transmission Operations produced the 2 millionth unit.

The RWD6 transmission is built into the Chevrolet Corvette, Camaro, Silverado HD, Tahoe, Suburban and Express, GMC Sierra HD, Yukon, Yukon XL, and Savana and Cadillac Escalade.

“The entire workforce exhibits a sense of ownership and pride in the transmissions they build,” said Donald Morand, area manager RWD Transmissions. “This continued dedication will lead us into our next big launch – the eight-speed – and the shared vision of continued improvement will make us successful.”

Future production includes a previously announced $322 million investment to produce the next generation of fuel efficient GF6 Gen3 and RWD eight-Speed transmissions.

In August 2012, Toledo Transmission Operations built the 1 millionth front-wheel-drive (GF6) transmission at the plant.

I am guessing that these are automatics no? Isn't the manual in a Camaro Borg-Warner/Asin?

Does anybody have any information on how these transmissions are holding up with miles on them. I never seem to hear anything other than occasional complaints about shifting.

They are holding up very well as far as the rear drivers from what I have seen. I have almost 7k on my 2012 silverado (6L80) and runs great. Driven a few with miles on them and they feel like new IMO. They do have their quirks as far as upshifting too soon in some instances (2-3 gear bogs then pulls hard). And there was a bulletin for start up pressure spikes causing the filter to crack, which points at inspecting the trans pump. At work, we haven't had one out of a truck yet.

As for the 6T70/75...there have been a couple out of cars. Otherwise, they seem to both be very solid transmissions.

I believe those are the 6T transaxles for FWD. Toledo used to be RWD only.

I'm still surprised the 8-speeds aren't out yet, as the tooling has been sitting in the newly-cleared factory space for nearly 2 years now.
