Major Technology Changes Afoot at GM
Date Posted 09-23-2004 GM has decided to phase out its Epsilon architecture, which is the company's most ubiquitous vehicle platform. Taking its cue from European manufacturers, such as Volkswagen with its new modular construction method, GM is seeking to introduce a more versatile platform on which it can use a greater variety of suspensions, engines and body styles. Epsilon 2, as the new architecture is currently titled, is expected to be wider than its predecessor, with the ability to accommodate several different wheelbases. In addition to this radical change in underpinnings, GM is allegedly planning to introduce an abundance of new engines and transmissions over the next couple of years. It was reported by The Car Connection that these choices will include, among others, a 2.8-liter V6, a 5.3-liter V8 to be used in front-drive configurations and a hybrid V8 for SUVs |

Does anyone have any read on when and on what vehicles will utilize Epsilon 2? I have heard that the Saab 9-3 and the Opel Vectra go first, followed by the Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6. The Malibu and G6 will not receive Epsilon 2 until 2008/2009.
Epsilon 2 will could also incorporate some crossover SUV product. If this happens, GM could get rid of Theta. |
