Supercharged 3800 dropped for 2008

Not that it is a surprise or anything. Unless this changes, the Supercharged 3800 engine and GT trim for the 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix will no longer be available. Please check out what else is new so far by clicking the link below:

Re: Supercharged 3800 dropped for 2008

I loved this engine. It's too bad GM had to let it get dated. I wish the supercharged 3.8 was available in the Lucerne instead of just the base.

215,000 on my 3.8 buick right now.

Re: Supercharged 3800 dropped for 2008

How much longer is the Grand Prix going to be around? It's probably going to be 90% fleet in 2008, with the G8 on the scene.

I did recently include the GXP in a list of used car bargains posted to my blog. Fun car that should be cheap used.

The Lucerne offers the 4.6L Northstar V8 as an option, replacing the Supercharged 3800.

I am thinking that the 3800 will be phased out altogether in favor of the 3.6L HF V6.

I think what he meant was that instead of the Base Lucerne having the 3800, it should have had the SC 3800.

Re: Supercharged 3800 dropped for 2008

What more can be said than GM stopped investing in improving it? "If it ain't broke don't fix it" doesn't apply to the highly competitive automotive industry.

Much as I love my supercharged Bonnie, the engine is a relic of the past and the sooner its gone, the better. An engine that needs a supercharger to get what horsepower a freakin' Hyundai 3.8L engine can get naturally aspirated is embarassing from an image standpoint, no matter how "bulletproof" it is/was and regardless of the smooth torque curve.

Let it go.

I think the 3.6 is far superior.

3800 is going away after 2008 anyway so them cancelling the SC engine makes sense now.

Re: Supercharged 3800 dropped for 2008

I am not shocked. I heard the 3800 was going away a few years ago. I like the engine because it powers my Ninety Eight and Toronado. It would have been nice to see it updated. They kept making improvements on it in the late 1980's well into the 1990's. It has been around in some form or another since 1961.

I wouldn't own a 4.6L Northstar powered Buick if you paid me. I want my 3.8, not the 3.6, but the 3.8. Damn GM and their refusal to update it. I've never cared for the Northstar engine. Quite honestly I don't care for the whole Cadillac lineup. They've become too European, there's not enough true American luxury there anymore. I want my American landbarge, that I can take on long trips, and ride in luxury. Thank god Buick still delivers that. But I digress. I'll own a Buick for as long as I'm around and Buick is around, and as long as I can, I'll own one with the 3.8 in it. I can only hope that the 3.6 will become as reputable and reliable as the 3.8 is now. If only the 3.6 was a pushrod engine.

Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm stuck in the past...

Re: Supercharged 3800 dropped for 2008

Let see, " bullet proof" , smooth torgue curve and if it aint broke dont fix it, sounds like a good reason to keep it and refine it. To me VVT sounds like a problem waiting to happen, or at least reliability that may not be on par with OHV (LS1) type engines. I personally would rather have old tried and true rather than new and unknown. I guess I will let someone else cut their teeth on the new stuff,

Re: Supercharged 3800 dropped for 2008

Do you guys with sc3800's always run high test? I always run it in both mine but I am wondering if I can get away with regular. I didnt think you could get the SC in any thing any more I thought the 5.3 replace it in the Grand Prix.
