DETROIT – OnStar by GM captured three of this year’s Telematics Update Awards, making it the only multiple winner in the 2005 judging and an eight-time winner in the award’s three-year history.

Running alongside the biggest and most influential telematics-focused conference and exhibition of the year – Telematics Update Detroit 2005 – the Telematics Update Awards is the only event of its type to recognize the industry’s best and brightest for their outstanding performance and achievements. OnStar’s initiatives were recognized with three awards:
  • Best Embedded/Terminal Product - OnStar was selected for its essential features like Automatic Crash Notification and hands-free calling, as well as its user-friendly three-button interface.
  • Best use of Telematics for Safety and Security - OnStar, which was recognized with the award for safety and leadership for the third time, was selected for its outstanding ability to use telematics solutions to enhance the driver’s safety and security during or after an emergency event.
  • Best Reseller/Retailer - OnStar, currently available on more than 50 GM models, was selected for its hands-free calling feature, which allows subscribers to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel while driving.

Over the Telematics Update Awards’ three-year history, OnStar’s industry leadership has been showcased with both individual and company-wide awards. Past honors include:
  • Leadership Award - 2003, 2004 – In 2003, OnStar was selected as the Telematics Industry Leader providing features like remote door unlock, hands-free calling and emergency services to its millions of subscribers. In 2004, Chet Huber, OnStar President, was the first individual to win this award. Huber was selected for driving the industry forward and helping to promote new telematics initiatives and awareness both to industry peers and the customer.
  • Telematics in Action Award - 2003, 2004 – As with the 2005 honor, OnStar was selected for its exceptional use of telematics to enhance drivers’ safety and security during or after an emergency.
  • Heroes Award Nominees - Telematics Service Provider Employee – 2003 – Curtis Johnson, an advisor at OnStar’s call center in Charlotte, N.C., received the Heroes award for his role in coordinating the rescue of a Littleton, Colo., man involved in a 2002 motor vehicle crash.

“Winning multiple awards is a reflection of OnStar’s position in the industry,” said Phil Magney, President, Principal Analyst, Telematics Research Group, Inc. and a Telematics Update Awards judge. “Each generation of OnStar equipment allows for better performance and has more features and more capabilities. They're a company that continues to evolve.” Along with the Telematics Research Group, Inc., the Telematics Update Awards are judged by the industry’s top thought leaders including executives from the GartnerG2, Strategy Analytics, Cogenia Partners LLC and ADVENTIS. This year’s Telematics Update Awards were presented on May 16, 2005.

Re: On Star Wins Awards

GM should intergrate Onstar with navigation instead of pushing onstar only. Failure to offer navigation in all GM vehicles will cost GM sales. Too bad Lutzo does not care

Nice to hear that about Onstar. I wonder if they'll have new technology to progress OnStar if competition comes.

I agree. And if neccessary, have a "GPS by OnStar" screen somewhere or something if it means so much to them.

Competition will be coming.

It's only a matter of time until Toyota can implement their system......

Re: On Star Wins Awards

Many people don't think Onstar is worth it but something happened last weekend that made me realize Onstar is well worth the $14.95 I pay for it.

I had stopped at a hardware store to pick up some supplies. I got into my Suburban, pulled out of the parking space, and waited for cars to go past so I could pull out onto the road. As I was waiting I catch something blue flying through the air right at me. I looked to my right and a blue older Ford Ranger is flipping end over end right towards me. I didn't even think, I just slammed the gas, and drove straight across the road and onto the shoulder. I looked back, and right where I was seconds before the truck was now laying upside down in the spot. So I immediately call Onstar, they ask whats my emergency, I tell them, they confirmed my location, contacted the police, and told me help was on the way. The authorities arrived a few minutes afterwards, and got the guy out. This was memorial day weekend, and apparently he was drinking and fell asleep behind the wheel. I was shaking just a little bit after all of this happened, but Onstar definitely helped out in this situation. The guy had knocked a telephone poll down so none of th phones worked, and this was out in an area that doesn't have all that well of cellphone coverage, nobody could get a signal, but Onstar still managed to connect. I had just got my renewal notice in the mail, and was thinking about cancelling, but that night I called up and subscribed.
