Re: Spring Hill Slated For New Product

As a Spring Hill employee since 1996, This is Welcome news if it all holds true! I was ready to sign on the dotted line and take the SAP (31 Years and out) next month. Personally, I saw Spring Hill being largely under utilized if it had gotten the new small car project instead of Orion, even more so than it currently is with building just the Chevy Traverse.

Hopefully this includes the Lambda based Escalade EXT. But i have to agree that this Avalanche Replacement thing should go to GMC and just have these two

Having 4 Lambda SUVs is no problem because the Traverse will be the base and volume model, Acadia will be for those who want something a little more than Traverse but don't have $ for Enclave, the Enclave would target customers looking for lux but not flash of Escalade, and Escalade would be trucklike and hopefully offer a V-8 somehow.

I'm so glad these new cars are going to be domestically built.

Re: Spring Hill Slated For New Product

So, what type of truck is the GMT-700?? Is it a new frame, like a fully boxed truck frame? or are they going unibody, i.e. Lambda-based??

GMT would imply a BOF truck platform...although the Lambdas technically have a GMT designation as well...

this appears to be good news.
Im confused a bit-- does that mean production ofthe Traverse will move in Dec?...
On a side note... I Just placed a factory order on a 2010 Traverse.

LDT is WAY too new to close -- I think it is THE newest GM plant in the US (correct me if I'm wrong). As NSAP said, the Enclave/Acadia will still be here, and from what I have been hearing the Outlook will stay on at least for a while as GM builds them for Penske under contract. And what happened to the Traverse coming to LDT? I thought that was getting moved away from Spring Hill....

Unfortunately with all the vehicles it sounds like GM is porting over to the Lambda platform, it just means more and more CUVs and SUTs that I won't touch with a 10' pole. For whatever reason, I cannot seem to get myself to like the Lambda platform or the vehicles built on it. Every time I see one/drive one/work on one, I just start coming up with reasons to hate it.

As of today, The buildout of the 2010 Traverse is still scheduled for a late NOV Timeframe at Spring Hill. Sales have picked up on the Traverse, and GM Has already cancelled 1 week of the scheduled downtime this summer to keep the field supply up. BTW, Thanks for buying a new Traverse!

As an S-10 owner I find this to be HUGE news. Until I read this it seemed GM had completely forgotten they made small trucks. Do you have any clue as to unibody vs. BOF, or even powertrains? Reviving the Atlas I6 would be nice, but it might would be cheaper to simply offer the High Value and/or High Feature V6.

Product news makes me so happy. GMT-700!!

Orion may get small cars, but Spring Hill is getting a variety of new product.

For the last few weeks rumors have been flying about which General Motors assembly plant would be selected to build small cars in the United States. Such clause came about from the recent agreement made between General Motors and the United Auto Workers. Well, today GM announced officially that they have selected the Orion, Michigan assembly plant to build the new small cars, leaving some to question the future of the newer, flexible Spring Hill, Tennessee plant.

GM has not formally announced which small cars Orion will be building, however GMI has been told that it will likely be the Chevrolet Viva and Buick small car. The Viva is going to be the replacement for the Aveo, due out next summer. Buick, as GMI broke news on several months ago, is slated to obtain a version of the Opel Astra compact hatchback. It is expected that the Astra is the Buick small car now slated for Orion. Starting in 2012 it is expected that Orion will build an all-new Buick sedan based on the Delta II small car platform as well.

GM's Spring Hill, TN plant is one of the newest assembly plants in the GM network. It is also a highly flexible plant and very large. Currently the plant is massively underutilized, building only the Chevrolet Traverse. However, today GMI learned that Spring Hill still has a future beyond being a standby plant. GM is planning to build the next Chevrolet Traverse at Spring Hill, as well as production for the next-generation Cadillac Escalade, which will be built on a variant of the Lambda platform. Also slated for Spring Hill is production of a Chevrolet SUT (Avalanche-like vehicle) based on the Lambda platform.

Possibly the biggest news out of the Spring Hill is that GM is now considering it as the assembly site for the next-generation Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon small trucks. Currently the small trucks are assembled at GM's Shreveport, Louisiana plant, which has been rumored to be closing or sold. The new trucks are known internally as the GMT-700's.
great news, however i was told that LGR was being tooled (ccrw) already for eclalade replacement? Although i wondered how that could happen on the sts/cts platform? Any morre details on this gmt-700 architecture?
I suspect that this news hasn't been made public to facilitate a exodus of older gm workforce. Further reducing costs on this potential new work.

While I don't totally hate the Lambda family of vehicles, I wouldn't put my money down on any one of them. If I'm going to buy a vehicle of that size & mass, I'll be in a Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon.

I've owned a total of 3 S10s in my 15 years of driving. They were better (IMO) than the Colo/Canyon. And, I did want to buy a Canyon at one time. But, when I got into one, it just felt cheap. I don't mean "inexpensive", I mean "cheap". It's like GM gave designers a $20 bill & said, "See what you can do with the compact trucks."
