Small premium Mini fighter from GM

Business Week reporter David Welch revealed a few days ago that General Motors may be developing a premium small car that targets the same type of customers who might consider a MINI. Dubbed the "micro-premium car", it would be positioned against the aforementioned MINI in the marketplace, as well as the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series.

Rear-wheel-drive is practically a must for such a car
The MINI is not RWD, and neither is the A3. Only the BMW has RWD, and since it is new to the U.S., there is no way to know if that is going to help or hinder its sales. I think if GM can adapt a Daewoo chassis to match the handling and fun factor of the MINI, they might have a hit on their hands.

yeah there was a buzz about this earlier in 2007. I really like the beat, i think it looks aggressive and is obviously geared towards first car buyers. Two thumbs up!

Re: Small premium Mini fighter from GM

I'd hardly consider the A3 or 1-series in the "micro premium car" category. Micro suggests something more Beat or Groove-sized than A3 or Mini...

Re: Small premium Mini fighter from GM

WTF???

Look GM....

If you want a REAL MINI Cooper/Cooper S fighter.... it has to come from Saturn.

Audi A3 and BMW 1 series are NOT competitors. Their purpose isn't even in the same ballpark!!
If GM wants to build competitors to A3 and 1-series, it needs to come from Saab and/or Cadillac. More specifically, A3 is a next-gen Saab 9-2X (possibly 9-1) competitor... and the 1-series is a sub-BLS sports coupe for Cadillac.

And Mini isn't RWD....

Sell the Matiz! The Corsa is far more attractive than the Astra, I hope that makes its way here.

Re: Small premium Mini fighter from GM

In the U.S., the 1-Series is in a class of its own, since the 128i starts at $30k.

A3 starts around $25k.

Mini-S starts around $21k.

C30 starts around $23k.

I think the article may be referring to the SAAB 9-1, which realistically should also start around $23k-$25k.

Saab & Saturn makes sense.
Obviously not planned as a volume seller in the US.

Re: Small premium Mini fighter from GM

Pontiac.

GM has said Pontiac is going to be a BMW competitor, and the G8 might prove that to be true. Why not stick to the guns and offer Mini fighter to compliment the G8.
