As prices jump, AAA warns of higher pump prices this year

Gas prices take sharp upward jump
The Business Journal of Phoenix
1/13/2006

AAA warns that tight supplies, high demand and several new environmental regulations will push up gasoline pump prices this year.

This week alone, Arizona's average price for a gallon of self-serve unleaded regular jumped about 9 cents to $2.33 per gallon Friday, according to AAA Arizona.

Crude oil prices once again briefly crossed over the $65 mark Thursday, prompted by the breakdown of talks between European officials and Iran, about the restart of Iran's nuclear research program.

The national average rose more than 9 cents to just under $2.34 per gallon, according to the membership travel services club.

"Crude oil producers are keeping up, albeit barely," said David Cowley, public affairs manager at AAA Arizona. "Producers and refiners are both adding capacity.

"And, the increased use of ethanol will prompt developments in that field - ethanol has the potential to reduce our dependence on foreign fuels. None of this helps prices now, but in the long run it might make a difference."

The cheapest gasoline in the continental U.S. is in Utah, where unleaded regular is $2.09 per gallon. New York is the most expensive place to "fill 'er up" at $2.56 per gallon.

NY is terrible. It's over $2.60 a gallon here, I went to Vermont yesterday and the price was $2.30. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it's because NY requires special additives in the gas, and it's in shorter supply than other types. If it means cheaper gas, I'd rather have the other supposedly less environmentally friendly fuel.

Which is why I can't believe that there are actually new environmental rules going into effect this year. The idea that the US needs 57 varieties of gasoline blends is ridiculous. Settle on one or two tops and cap it at that.

You Americans think gas is expensive? A $.09 increase per gallon? Ha! That's nothing.

In Canada gas jumps between $.79 to $1 a litre by the hour. Just to clarify, a litre is much smaller than a gallon and $3 a gallon works out to be around $.85 per litre. Last fall when gas prices spiked we were paying around $1.30/L in Ottawa and up to $1.80/L in other parts of the country. That's over $6 per gallon.

In Southwestern Ontario, we are paying $3.17 US a gallon now.

Just some thought to our neighbours to the south.
