Pontiac GM plant to lose 900 jobs

Truck facility will cut one of its shifts in January
October 20, 2004

General Motors Corp. plans to lay off about 900 UAW members from its massive Pontiac Truck Assembly plant in January due to internal GM projections that demand is sliding for some of its most popular pickups.


The job cuts are notable because the trucks made in Pontiac are the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, two of GM's most popular and profitable vehicles. The cuts are, in some respects, a sign that GM is nervous about sales next year and that its best-selling products are getting old compared with other pickups on the market.

Regardless, it was due for redesign two years ago in my opinion. However, I have no doubt they will be world class when they do finally come out.
