I will be there again next Thursday to make some photos; for now, here is what I can tell you:

    • Slightly lower specs were given - power of 170 PS (125.0 kW; 167.7 hp) @ 4250 rpm, torque of 285 N·m (210 lbf·ft) @ 1650-4250 rpm (200 PS reserved for Corsa OPC)
    • Compression rate is 10.5:1 - quite high for a turbocharged engine (8.8:1 in Family 1 Turbo)
    • Chain-driven DOHC valvetrain with dual continuous variable cam phasing (DCVCP); no variable valve lift.
    • Grey cast-iron block, aluminum alloy cylinder head.
    • Single-scroll turbocharger; the large radiator at the front is the intercooler
    • Bore, stroke and displacement same as 1.6 L Family 1, but otherwise entirely new block/head
    • Stratified charge (lean-burn) capable: an oval-shaped cavity (an ovoid) is on the piston's surface
    • The central injector is mounted vertically between two intake valves; the spark plug is slightly angled towards the injector.
    • Euro 5 listed, however Euro 6 requirements are the same for DI petrol engines

Fuel consumption and release dates were not provided yet.

I have updated my 1.6 turbo engines comparison with these new figures.

There it is, now it sounds like GM. Starts off saying 200hp 1.6T with 221lb/ft, then GM takes over makes it cheaper and once they've finished its now 168hp and 210lb/ft.

If you read the original PR, they said "peak power" 200 hp and "maximum torque" 300 Nm with "various power outputs" to be available.

The current Family 1 has three versions of the turbocharged 1.6 - one making 180 PS for the Opel Astra GTC, Opel Insignia, and Chinese Chevrolet Cruze, and another two making 192 or 210 PS in the Corsa OPC; I expect this to continue with the new engine.

New Opel Engine plant inaugurated in Szentgotthárd, Hungary

    2012-09-20

    • Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán joins Opel Deputy Chairman Sedran open €500 million world-class flex-plant
    • Production of new-generation engines starts before year end
    • Half-a-million engines will be produced annually at full capacity

Szentgotthárd. The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has today joined Opel Management Board Deputy Chairman, Thomas Sedran, for the inauguration of Opel’s new engine plant in Szentgotthárd, Hungary, exactly two years after the project was announced.

Orbán acknowledged the importance of the new facility for the Hungarian economy, while Sedran emphasized that the investment is an important part of Opel’s product offensive.

“We are investing billions of euro in 23 new models and 13 new engines by 2016,” said Sedran. “Many of these engines will be built right here in Szentgotthárd.”

The €500 million flex-plant features world-class flexibility and efficiency. It will produce highly fuel-efficient gasoline and diesel engines. It will have the ability to swiftly adapt production in response to changing market demand. The plant will have more than 800 employees and manufacture half-a-million engines per year at full capacity.

The first 1.6-liter mid-size gasoline engines that roll off the line will power the new Opel Astra range with its new four-door sedan. It had its world premiere last month at the Moscow International Motor Show. The engines provide extraordinarily high maximum torque along with significantly reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. All of the new generation Opel engines built in Szentgotthárd will meet the strict future EURO 6 emissions standard.

Opel presents new midsize gasoline engine at Aachen Colloquium
    2012-10-11

    • All-new family of downsized turbocharged engines
    • CO2 emissions and fuel consumption reduced by 13 percent
    • 33 percent higher power and torque
    • Class-leading refinement

Aachen/Ruesselsheim. Opel revealed details of its new midsize gasoline engine family at the Aachen Colloquium in Germany... The new engine family comprises a 1.6 liter Eco Turbo with 125 KW/170 hp and 280 Nm peak torque, as well as a Performance Turbo variant offering 147 kW/200 hp and 300 Nm peak torque. The 170 hp engine has been developed with fuel economy, high low-end torque and elasticity in mind, while the performance of the 200 hp unit makes it the benchmark in its class. The roll-out of the new engine family – which has been developed in Ruesselsheim, Germany – will begin in early 2013...

At the heart of the new SIDI ECOTEC Turbo family is an all-new cylinder block able to withstand peak cylinder pressure of 130 bar. Cast iron was selected as the preferred material for the cylinder block in combination with an aluminum bedplate.

    Class-leading refinement and performance

Opel has designed the new midsize gasoline engine family to be a leader not only in emissions and fuel consumption, but also in terms of refinement and performance.

Key development objectives for refinement were low overall radiated noise and vibration levels, and no unusual sounds. Achieving these goals enabled vehicle integration that can tune primary engine orders in the induction and exhaust systems to meet specific vehicle objectives. The excellent acoustic and vibration performance of the engine is crowned by the cam cover, which is decoupled from the cylinder head via specific fasteners and a sealing system designed for high temperatures, due to the nearby turbocharger.

As a result of these “sound-engineering” measures, the customer perceives quiet and smooth idling, no unusual noises throughout the operating range, and a pleasant sound quality even at high speeds and loads.

Balance shafts are industry-first for 1.6-liter four-cylinder engines

Opel’s SIDI ECOTEC is the only engine in its class to offer balance shafts. The two balance shafts are inserted in tunnels from the rear end of the cylinder block and are driven by an inverted-tooth chain. The exhaust side shaft features cast iron gears to reverse rotational direction of the exhaust shaft. The optional system offsets the vibrations inherent in the design of four-cylinder engines and thus helps to maximize comfort and reduce noise to a minimum.

    Turbocharging for high low-end torque

...Thanks to its specially designed turbines, the midsize gas engine’s turbocharger provides response that is usually generated by twin-scroll turbines on larger engines.

The engine retains the proven concept of a turbine-integrated exhaust manifold. This design was chosen instead of a twin-scroll concept because of its packaging and manufacturing advantages. Although the turbocharger has identical interfaces, each variant of the new SIDI ECOTEC engine features a dedicated turbo aerodynamic.

The compressors are designed to deliver high low-end torque without generating noticeable aerodynamic sounds. Combined with low and high-pressure resonators, air-borne noises effects like hiss, pulsation and blade-pass noise are almost completely suppressed. With additional aspects like air handling, duct design and control strategies for let-off noise, the new engine benefits from an aggressive boost strategy without the typically associated turbo related acoustic degradation...

Direct-injection for high fuel efficiency and performance

Opel’s engineers... selected a central direct-injection fuel system, for optimum fuel efficiency and minimal emissions.

The central location of spark plug and injector over the combustion chamber, and their orientation parallel to the crankshaft, forms a compact package with the capability to support homogeneous and stratified engine operation.

The valve train is operated by low-friction hydraulic roller finger followers and driven by a timing chain with a maintenance-free hydraulic tensioner. Acoustics are further improved by the inverted teeth of the cam drive chain. For mass reduction the midsize gasoline engine features a two-piece crankcase design, supported at the lower end by a die-cast aluminum bedplate.

The cylinder block is manufactured using an innovative thin-wall casting method. This allows the integration of different functional features directly into the raw block and offers potential to reduce production time.

The engine uses a broached press-fit between the cylinder block and the bedplate instead of dowels, in order to optimize the main bearing shape as well as its positional accuracy. The structural design considers the engine’s use in a variety of vehicle applications, allowing minimum integration effort and consistent part interchangeability.

The structural benefit derived from the combination of a forged steel crankshaft, optimized main bearing journal diameters, and iron main bearing cap inserts results in minimized noise and vibration at mid and high rpm.

Two different pistons have been designed for the Eco and Performance Turbo engines. Each has a dedicated top land including a small bowl. A cast iron ring carrier adapted to the high cylinder pressures is common to each piston. The PVD coated first piston ring is an additional friction-reduction measure.

PS. 280 Nm is achieved using overboost function, while regular rating is 260 Nm...

    http://media.opel.com/media/intl/en/...l_cascada.html
    http://www.opel-blog.com/2012/10/10/...r-des-kreises/

The highlight in the Cascada powertrain line-up will be the 1.6 SIDI Turbo ECOTEC gasoline engine. This midsize direct injection unit is part of a fully new generation that makes its debut in early 2013 and is geared to very smooth ride and torque delivery and great fuel economy. It delivers 125 kW/170 hp, between 1,650 and 3,200 rpm – and 280 Nm thanks to an overboost function.

That sound almost like the top of Mazda's SkyActiv piston.

I wonder if the compression ratio at TDC will be between 13 and 16 to 1?
It is important what WE use as our "moral compass" and ...

The 1.6 SIDI Turbo ecoFLEX Start&Stop is available to order now with the new Nov. 19 pricelist.

    Power/Torque
    125 kW (170 PS) @ 6000 rpm
    260 Nm (280 Nm overboost) @ 1650-3200 rpm

Seems like the performance has been tuned for fuel economy and CO2 emissions, with 14-16% better highway/city figures than the previous 1.6 turbo Family 1 engine (slightly beyond the initially projected 13% improvement) and pretty much the same as the current 1.4 turbo ecoFLEX.

The same curb weight figure for GTC, 5-door and sedan looks suspicious though, as for the 1.4 turbo ecoFLEX engine the Astra GTC has a curb weight of 1437 kg, Astra 5-door 1393 kg, and Astra sedan 1449 kg.

I have updated my engine comparison table with these numbers.

Re: Opel: New 200hp 1.6T Coming

The 'performance' version of the 1.6 Turbo has been introduced for the Astra GTC only.

    http://www.opel.de/content/dam/Opel/...131219_1.0.pdf
    http://www.opel.de/fahrzeuge/modelle...a-gtc/gtc.html

This version is rated at 200 PS @ 5500 rpm and 280 Nm @ 1650-3500 rpm with 300 Nm overboost (207/221 lb.ft), compression ratio 9.5:1.

    Engine comparison table updated.

It is interesting to note that the Astra GTC should now, with its 0-100 km/h performance of 7.9 s, match the Ford Focus Ecoboost 180 PS - though it doesn't quite match the fuel economy, 'thanks' to its enormous curb weight of 1503 kg.

Think about weight reduction required by 2020 CO2 and fuel economy targets set by CAFE and the European Comission - if the Astra GTC were 1330 kg instead, like the aforementioned Ford Focus, it would have a power-weight ratio of 150 PS/t, and its 0-100 km/h performance could very well be in the range of 7.0-7.4 s, which is just a tad bit short of hot hatches like the Mini Cooper S, Corsa OPC/VXR, Fiesta ST, Peugeot 208 GTI, or Renault Clio RS.

GM has all the necessary technology to make it reality.

It's also worth mentioning that the GTC should now best the outgoing VW Scirocco 1.4 TSI in both performance and fuel economy numbers, at least until the 2015 Scirocco Mk4 arrives.
