New Mex plant turns animal fat to 75M gallons of biodiesel

Quote:
ALBUQUERQUE (AP)--A Texas company plans to develop an $80 million biodiesel plant in Clovis, where another company is already preparing to break ground on a similar project.... The new Clovis plant will be capable of producing 75 million gallons of biodiesel fuel each year by processing animal fat from feed lots within a 100-mile radius of Clovis, Garrity said....

The facility is expected to employ up to 100 people during construction and 40 people when it becomes operational next fall.

Trust me, there isn't much else going on in Clovis, NM. This should get a pretty good local reception.

Waste not, want not. I suppose it's good to hear that cattle are capable of producing a usable energy source instead of just methane. However, the PETA people are not going to like this at all.

They'll be conflicted for sure... on one hand, animals are being killed (BAD); on the other hand, a biofuel is being produced as a result (GOOD).

It's almost like... a trade-off.

If you really can turn animal fat into biodiesel in a profitable way, you are going to see these plants pop up all over the country. Every slaughterhouse will have one.

I don't think they'll be killing the animals just for the biofuel. I think the animal is already dead. If they were going to start killing millions of animals to make fuel I'm pretty sure I'd be against it too.

Since mad-cow disease, they don't know what to do with the leftover of dead animals. Good thing they found a use for that.

I'm sure that you're correct; but the PETA logic regarding eating animals is that if there were no one to eat the steaks, the cow wouldn't be killed in the first place.

Now it will be, if there weren't anyone to eat the steaks or drive the cars/trucks fueled by the biodiesel that was produced from the animal's remains, etc....

Why not take it a step further, and use dead humans, like the movie Soylent green, only don't make crackers just fuel.

And we sure have plenty of people for crude. Making animal fat into fuel sure beats pouring it down the sewer. Company in Cincinnati used to use it in fabric softener, probably still does.

Re: New Mex plant turns animal fat to 75M gallons of biodiesel

I can't imagine what the ambient air near this plant smells like. I've driven past poultry processing plants and it's a pretty nasty smell.

Doesn't biodiesel's exhaust (when made from fryer oil) smell like french fries? If so, would this smell like steak/burgers when it's burned? Mmmm.

The strange thing about the PETA logic is that in their perfect world there would be no use by humans of domesticated cows to speak of, except perhaps as the rare pet or dung producer (dried cow dung is sold as fuel in India). So in their defense of cows, they would, in effect, be advocating the decline and potential loss /extinction of Bos Taurus as a species in many parts of the world.

Is there a logic in PETA ? It's not like there's no other and more important problems on planet.
