I won't get into specifics, but believe me, GM gets it.
I believe the evidence available to a non-GM person also shows GM gets it, a lot. The new 1.6 and 1.4 Turbo DI engines, the 1.4 designed for HCCI application, the use of 6 speed auto with 4 cylinder engines, BAS+ (the technical description of which has been removed from Wikipedia)-these are the technologies for the mainline autos and these technologies represent a more cost effective solution than the Toyota Synergy drive system for increasing mileage.

GM builds every configuration of pickup/SUV known to man. From the Suburban, Tahoe, oh you want one that "changes"? OK, here's the Avalanche. You want a luxury version? Here's the Escalade. How about a Hybrid version? No problem... Two door pickups, four door pickups. Diesel pickups...

You want a Fuel efficient car you say? Here's a Piece Of Sh1t Aveo...now go away and don't bother us...

Two years ago when the Kirk Kervorkian (sic)/Carlos Gohen thing came out I was rooting for GM to successfully repel the whole thing.

Now I'm wishing Carlos Gohen had gotten the top job at GM. I think he's got more vision and "get it done already" in his little finger than Rick Wagoner's got in his whole body.

GM. The truck company. Ready to dominate the 1990's !

Cobalt XFE: better mileage than a Civic or Corolla.
Malibu 4 cyl-6speed: Better mileage than a Camry or Accord.
Impala: same mileage as an Avalon or Maxima.
Vue hybrid: better mileage than a CRV or RAV-4.
CTS: better mileage than a 335i or C350.

It looks like you are the one stuck in the 1990s.

Re: Mulally: Americans drew the line at $3.50/gallon

We're sitting at $3.62 here in Pearland, TX. At least we were yesterday.

I actually saw a brand new Expedition EL yesterday so I guess Texans will probably be the last to give up the big BOF SUV's and trucks.

Texas pretty much started the SUV craze anyways. In the '80s my family would go on a lot of trips to Maryland, Virginia, N. Carolina, etc. and we'd seriously be among the only people with a Suburban.

OH yeah... that's right! We're the ONLY region in the country to NOT experience a drop in home sales!!! Definitely a silver lining.

same here BUT i think people are not going to buy a new car till they see what is going to happen down the road. you can buy a lot of gasoline for what you would spend to trade DOWN in size to get better mileage.

Re: Mulally: Americans drew the line at $3.50/gallon

I was all about getting rid of BOF vehicles years ago but unfortunatley the most recent generation of unit body CUVs are as heavy as the BOF SUVs of a few years back.
Look at the Touareg, Cayenne, MBs and X5s. those things are over 5000lbs with V8s.
And I haven't even mentioned the lambdas yet, and they have V6s.

One of the lightest CUVs around is the SRX, but GM decided it was a lost cause after the '07 interior refresh and it would have been a killer vehicle with 3.6DI and 6 speed. Take the 3.73 gears out and put in 3.45s. the 6 speed has .67 overdrive vs. the 5 speed's .75 and you would have been right below 2000 rpms at 80mph.
Plus a RWD v6 SRX without Ultraview only weighs about 4100lbs, and has(had) the most potential for excellent mileage of any CUV available on the market. My guess is if the lambdas can be rated at 26mpg the SRX with it's smaller frontal area and lower weight could have been at 27mpg or even 28mpg.

Like Miss Jackson said - "Give me a Beat!"

GM had better be pushing the Beat to the front burner for the US. It needs a DI 1.4 for the standard version, and a turbo DI 1.4 for a hot version. And yes, I will buy one.

GM needs a high mileage car that doesn't look like a dorkmobile.
