MT Ranks '08 Malibu Ahead of '08 Accord

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...dan_comparison

MT still ranks Camry as the #1 midsize. They sure don't want to make their '07 COTY pick look bad.

But they rank the Malibu ahead of the Accord. The Altima was the other car in the comparo and finished 4th.

Not bad. In every review I've seen, Malibu is considered in the same league as Camry and Accord. Most seem to put it above the Camry, although not MT. If Chevy is considered to be on equal footing with these cars, that's what GM needs. Hopefully this will become the public perception.

Most reviews I've seen give a slight edge to the Accord, so it was good to see the Malibu ranked higher by MT.

I'm surprised anyone can rank the Camry over the Accord or Malibu. The Camry is so boring they should include a year's supply of coffee with every purchase.

I think this statement from the article regarding the Camry says it all
"Finest all-around mix of power, handling, room, and bells and whistles-no wonder it was our 2007 Car of the Year"
Can we say saving face? We were right, you know!!

Re: MT Ranks '08 Malibu Ahead of '08 Accord

Why can't they say, "you know what? The Camry was our 2007 Car of the Year. This is 2008, things are different this year. Say hello to the superior 2008 Malibu."

I've driven a 2007 Camry V6 and a 2008 Malibu LT 4 cylinder. Being completely objective, the Camry is the epitome of a soul-less, point A-to-point B, vanilla bland sedan. Malibu looks and drives better.

Malibu is such an amazing car... if you haven't had a chance to drive an LTZ I would suggest that you do so immediately! I drove one and i'm not sure how in the world they can still love the camry over malibu.

Re: MT Ranks '08 Malibu Ahead of '08 Accord

one reason MT favors the camry is because they only test the SE version which others generally dont test since its not the volume model. The SE probably handles as well as the Malibu and Accord but it looks worse than Malibu inside and out and it costs more. I wouldnt buy it over the Malibu.

They definitely had to keep the camry in first place due to it being COTY last year. The worst part of the comparo was that they noted 3 of the 4 editors would actually buy the Accord instead due to its reputation for resale and reliability. So its not the better car, but they would prefer it anyway.

well at least we can say they are giving credit where credit is due. #2 is better than #4!

Re: MT Ranks '08 Malibu Ahead of '08 Accord

The Camry used to be a very good, solid well built family car, but these days it's turned into a joke. The only thing the new one has going for it is the power, otherwise it's terrible build and materials quality and boring driving dynamics as well as ugliness (at least on the inside).

I haven't driven the Malibu, but from what I've seen in person, it is better quality than the Camry, but I was still disappointed with the quality, things like the paint on the trim wasn't applied properly. Hopefully that was an early production car (first and only one my dealer got for the time being).

The Accord is as solid as ever though, but very uncomfortable inside. Other than it all other hondas have ****ty interiors.

Re: MT Ranks '08 Malibu Ahead of '08 Accord

This second place is vastly superior to the usual GM finishes in comparos.
I have long maintained they need to build their mainstream sedans to the test. GM needs to finish #1 in a few major magazine comparos.

If the Camry is a joke, GM needs a 400,000+ per year joke too.

They need to get to work yesterday on making the 2009 Malibu the #1 finisher in this class.

I doubt this is face saving at MT. Unless it has something to do with ad revenue (naaahhh!!), last year's COTY is last year's news.
Going by the face-saving line of argument, they would pick the same car for COTY every year to save face. Doesn't add up.

They are EVERYWHERE here in MI. Out in CA though, people favor Toyota a bit more though. We are still fairly true to our roots here in MI.

Re: MT Ranks '08 Malibu Ahead of '08 Accord

MT is out of step with everyone else.

I've also seen quite a bit of dismay around the web over the Accord's large size, derivative styling and to a lesser extent, odd interior design, especially the console. IMO the new one is definitely not a home run and has left the door open for the Malibu's accendancy.
