Well since you seem to be an advocate of manual transmission cars that are hard to find, then you should be pushing the Cobalt XFE that is rated to 36 mpg hwy. And many Ion and Cobalt 2.2 ecotec owners have been reporting 40 mpg highway for years before the XFE upgrades.

My wife owns an '06 Ion 2.2L Manual. And yes, 40+ mpg (at 75-80mph) highway has been seen many times. I know a couple of guys with the Aveo and even though it is rated lower than a Cobalt it reaches into the high 40's from what I am told.
