Tuesday, May 27, 2008

MORAINE — The local General Motors assembly plant will return to full production next Monday, a plant spokeswoman said Tuesday, May 27.

"We've just announced that effective Monday, June 2, 2008, all shifts of production will be running at Moraine Assembly," said Jessica Peck, the spokeswoman. "That means that all second-shift employees should report back to work on Monday, June 2. And all first- and third-shift employees should report to work at this time."

~
The plant has two production shifts, as well as a third shift for maintenance, security and other employees.

They sell them overseas now, and GM has a tax break.

I sure wish they'd facelift the Trailblazer at least. I always like them, and rented one once that was great (except for the 90's interior). When are they going to kill these things, anyway?

Re: More GM Moraine workers set to return (GMT360)

20-25% are sold overseas (BRICK ME)

We are making 375 - 400 a shift. 2 Shifts a day 5 days a week.

We used to build 633+ a shift. 2 shifts a day 6 days a week.

The date of them to stop making them last I heard is Sept. '09

Why stop making them? They paid for themselves long time ago, Managment calls them Cash Cows. ( I understand why to stop producing them, But I am just shedding some light on why we haven't)

Maybe because people like them, and there's nothing else to replace them with?

Equinox and Terrain should replace them...
Looks like I'll have yet another discontinued vehicle in my garage.

That really frustrates me.

GM puts no effort or enhancement into this model since 2002 and they'll just let it die on the vine.

Because some consumers still buy them. Sure, they don't need to "badgineer" it across four brands, but consolidating it to one well-built, up-to-date model for the globe makes perfect sense. Of course, this is not what GM will do, but if it had one hugely competent model to compete with say, the 4Runner, worldwide, I'd think that that would be a very reasonable plan. If the plan also would be to share the platform with a compact pick-up that would also be sold globally, then the plan would make even more sense. Again, not that GM would ever do such a thing.

And then they'll claim there's no market for such a vehicle.

Meanwhile, Toyota will continue to update the 4Runner and market it globally and somehow find a certain degree of success from it. There's a reason why Toyota is about to overtake the General in sales, and it ain't because GM's shrinking to profitability.

The Acadia/Traverse/Outlook/Enclave were supposed to be the replacement for these vehicles. Only problem is that you can't get 4x4 or decent towing capabilities in those vehicles. I'd say give the TB/Envoy another update and let them live. Before $4 gas, there wasn't enough $$$ to differentiate these vehicles from the fullsize SUVs. With gas prices the way they are, I think there's a market for these midsize SUVs, especially with AFM and the hp coming from the newer V6s. They could be hot sellers again if they were updated and marketed with better fuel economy.

i agree absolutely. this is the last full frame, RWD midsize truck from GM. try hooking a plow up to a traverse. try towing a car on a trailer with a traverse, etc. the GMT 900's are great and all, but they are too big and too expensive for a lot of people. And i see far more GMT360's in my area than i see 800 and 900 suv's combined. People are holding onto their 3 - 6 year old 360's, and I feel as though it's more because they haven't rolled out a new one.

All it would take is a quick freshening up to be a big seller again. update the 1997 retro interior, do some simple styling upgrades to the exterior, maybe do a "real" avalanche type variant - not that abortion GMC envoy XUV - and run with a newer V6 as well as the AFM 5.3, both with a 6 speed auto.

everyone wants better gas mileage, but some people can't go to a unibody car-based "truck".
