Which end up in private hands a year later. Fleet sales are not the problem. Discounts are.

That's why it's so profitable. GMC is the Mercury of trucks. The truck part of GMC is only rebadged and well trimmed Chevrolets. Everyone knows this and it's never been a secret. Still, sales are usually good and since the prices paid are greater than for Chevy's and the cost of putting a different grille and and a few interior bits into them is so low the profit made is handsome. I say that's just good business.

That said, the new Terrain has it's own sheetmetal to differentiate it form the Equinox.

Interestingly enough, it seems that every time a third party reviews GMC (such as when the ATF did earlier this year), they magically say it's OK for GM to keep the brand. I'd say that means the business case for GMC is quite strong, otherwise the ATF would have said ditch it.

Still makes more profit than it hurts them in CAFE.

In fact GMC probably makes more profit than it would cost the brand to pay CAFE fines if it was a stand alone.

Yes, because Oldsmobile taught us that GM is GM and all those customers will flock right over to the other GM offering.

They're cutting brands anyway aren't they? It's not like this is some theoretical discussion.

Stupidly. Every single GM brand had a purpose, even back when Oldsmobile was around. GM was too stupid to realize this and so it lost the market share needed to keep all the brands it had alive. Corporate mismanagement at it's finest. Of course, it's all moot now as there is no going back.

Plus, GMC is the second-best selling brand to Chevrolet, and GM's most profitable, so obviously it should be chopped right off.

It doesn't matter to me anyways, I'm done with GM, at least until they start showing some signs of intelligence again. I'll hold onto my "old GM" Buick and when the time comes to replace the Silverado, I'll buy a Ford. Not because Ford was fortunate enough to have to get financing before the crisis, but because they are showing signs of intelligence.

Do you really think its smart to get rid of your 2nd best-selling brand, thats is one of your most profitable? I don't

Sadly, by trimming down GM, which I agree is good for the overall health of the company (although maybe not how they did it), 2 of the 3 cars I considered last year when I bought my G8 are no longer there: 9-3, G8, CTS. For me at least, GM is looking like Cadillac or bust when it comes time to trade in either vehicle we own in the future.

I assume based on this thread then that GM is hoping to have the sales of SAAB, HUMMER and Saturn finalized before MY10? Or since they're on the chopping block GMI just isn't covering the MY10 lineup for those. I doubt SAAB will change hands by then, they still haven't decided on a buyer yet.
