Lutz: GM Aiming For 2010 Chevy Volt Introduction

Link: http://yahoo.reuters.com/news/articl...mktNews&rpc=44

GENEVA, March 6 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp has set a target for production of an all-electric car in 2010, GM's product chief and Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said on Tuesday.

Lutz said the major uncertainty facing the Chevrolet Volt, a concept vehicle GM unveiled in January, was whether lithium-ion batteries can be developed to power it. A running Volt prototype is expected by the end of 2007, he said.

"We have set an internal target of production in 2010. Whether we can make that or not, this is still kind of an unpredictable program for us," Lutz told reporters on the sidelines of the Geneva auto show.

He added: "We're sort of outside our comfort zone."

GM detailed its broad plans for the all-electric Volt at the Detroit auto show, but the world's No. 1 automaker declined then to disclose a production timeline.

Things to do list (by 2010):

Install that electrical outlet near the garage door...

Exactly where they need to be.

Comfort Zones are not conducive to change, or exciting products.

You don't already have them? We have 3 plugs in the Garage, one on each side and one in the front.

It sounds good.. but he also really seems to be leaving open alot of excuses. "unpredictable.." "whether we can make it or not.." "outside our comfort zones.."

shut the hell up and do it, if you dont, kiss your company goodbye

They certainly need to figure out how to make this happen or they will be disappointing a large number of customers or what would have been a large number of customers.

It is better to under promise and over deliver.

Re: Lutz: GM Aiming For 2010 Chevy Volt Introduction

Why would it take GM a shorter time to produce this new type of car then it would for the new Camaro using existing technollogy? I hope they can make it by 2010. I have a feeling the Camaro is going to feel old when it finally comes out.

Re: Lutz: GM Aiming For 2010 Chevy Volt Introduction

I wonder what type of power the battery recharge would take. It could be efficient but it could also be an energy hog. I know places like Cali are already facing brownouts (ofcourse a lot of that happened thanks to Enron) but their electric grid is on overload during the summer months. I don't think they could take everyone charging their cars at night. Then again, i dont know how much electricity it would take to charge.

Re: Lutz: GM Aiming For 2010 Chevy Volt Introduction

Whatever happened to the country that found itself outmatched by the Japanese Mitsubishi Zero fighter in 1941 - and came right back at 'em with the superior Grumman Hellcat like 10 months later ? Why does EVERYTHING take 5 years and 50 different committees ? Why does it take 3 years to build a battery (I know, I know, it's new technology...) Why does it take 3 years to build a new Camaro ? Gimmee a break... They built the friggin A-bomb from scratch at Los Alamos in less time than it'll take to get the Volt out the door...

I relaly like it that they are outside their comfort zone. They have to be taking chances, otherwise will never get anywhere. Get this car out even sooner and then I'd be impressed.
