Yeah it has been really quiet here in the Vancouver area. It doesn't really surprise me though that 4 of the ones rumoured to close here are within a 30 minute drive of me, there are 8 or 9 within 30 minutes of my house.

Barnes Wheaton in Coquitlam going doesn't surprise me. When we tried to buy our car their they were awful and rude.

BW wanted full price and market interest rate for the car we wanted as they didn't have it on their lot, the other two dealerships were willing to bring it in at the incentive rates ($off+ 0%), that was in 2003. My friend ran into the same thing trying to buy a truck from them in the fall of 2008 as he lives 2 minutes away. He ended up buying from another dealer and they had to do a dealer trade to get it, and he still got the incentives.

The one I am curious about is Eagle Ridge GM in Coquitlam. They turn over a lot of used vehicles but they bring them all in from the US it seems.

As far as I know it's GM's call when it comes to factory incentives and all dealerships have to honor it, but dealerships can offer their own incentives, policies and prices if they choose as well. I'm not sure why BW would want to charge you interest on that vehicle though, it's not like it takes any effort to get a vehicle from another dealer. There's so many different policies for every dealership that it gets really confusing from a consumer standpoint as to what you're going to pay, what you should expect, what kind of rebates or sales are offered, etc.

When I lived in Devon AB, it was Devon Chevrolet's incentive to give $1500 off every new or used purchase if there was no trade in on vehicles that could not be GM Optimized and sold on their lot since they refused to sell anything but new or optimized vehicles. They would still take your trade if you wanted, but they would rather not have to deal with it at all if they didn't have to. Other dealerships would take the trade and either auction the vehicle to a wholesaler or put it on their lot regardless if it was optimized or not, but no $1500 off purchase if you didn't trade something in either.

I ran into a dealer in Kamloops BC who wanted over $5000 more than a dealership in Port Coquitlam for the same make, model, year and options on a brand new 1999 Chev Silverado.

Why they still have dealerships making up their own incentives, prices and policies I really don't understand. They should consider moving to the 'no-dicker sticker' policy that Toyota has. That would also make good dealerships money and bad dealerships go out of business, which in turn would not be forcing GM to rip dealerships out from under people right now. One of the many mistakes GM has made I suppose but I do hope they at least learn from them this time.
