It's official: Flint to build Cruze and Volt engines

General Motors confirms intention to manufacture engine for battery-powered Volt in Flint

Quote:
FLINT, Michigan -- General Motors confirmed that it intends to make Flint the manufacturing home of the engine for the much-touted, battery-powered Chevrolet Volt, according to paperwork filed with the city.
...
The new documents indicate the facility would be located on Van Slyke Road adjacent to Flint Engine South and Flint Truck Assembly.
...
The site also will produce the four-cylinder engine for the next-generation Cobalt, called the Cruze.
...
The paperwork also offered new details about GM's coming engine plant.

• The plant constitutes a $326-million investment.

• It would be 530,000 square feet, making it the seventh-largest of GM's 10 facilities in Genesee County.

• Bringing the plant here means Genesee County would retain 300 jobs, though it doesn't indicate any jobs created.

• Production is set to begin in 2010.

There is no factory currently located there. It's across or near Flint Engine South with builds the 4.2 Inline 6. The employees will come from the closing Powertrain which was the last remaining plant on the old Buick City complex because of the 3800 going away.

Per ABC 12 in Flint.

"Paperwork has been filed by GM for a brownfield designation for a small engine plant. The automaker is proposing to build that $300 million facility in the area of Flint Engine South.
This new facility is suppose to keep about 300 jobs in the area. These aren't new jobs because GM is ending its 3800 line at Flint Engine North.'

I look forward to the day when GM finally has its business back in the black and is expanding here at home. The next time there is a new plant built here in the states, GM should put it in Flint as repayment for what Roger Smith did to that city.

It will never happen. Past union behavior made sure of that. Militant unions have a way of discouraging business investments for some reason.

This is great news. To bad they arent building the whole vehicle in flint. It would be neat to see GM build the volt in flint. Flint is the birthplace of General Motors, and it would be a great place to build a vehicle that could potentialy lead to the rebirth of GM.

this why the foreign car companies built all their plants in "right to work states" as they saw what happen to the US companies dealing with unions. nothing wrong with unions if they are reasonable in their dealing with the companies.
