Insights Into GM Tech in Future BMWs

This article:
http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dl...1041/AutoShows

Talks about the GM/BMW/Daimler collaberation...

Excerpt:

">> Hybrids: In 2009, BMW will use a version of GM's Two-Mode heavy-duty rear-wheel-drive transmission that enables large cars and rwd SUVs to get an estimated 25 percent fuel economy improvement in city and highway driving. GM, which developed the transmission, is selling it to BMW and DaimlerChrysler.

BMW has not said which of its vehicles will get the Two Mode transmission. About 60 BMW engineers are working alongside GM and DaimlerChrysler engineers in Troy, Mich., to adapt the GM transmission to the BMW engine."

Looks like working with BMW may be of help to them.

Re: Insights Into GM Tech in Future BMWs

Is it a good thing or bad thing that GM is using new technology before BMW?

Hopefully the risk has been taken into consideration. Or is GM the guinea pig in this whole collaboration?

Is it any suprise BMW is using a GM transmission? The 3 and 5 series BMWs used GMs 5L40E Hydramatic transmission in the past.

Will that mean that GM will sell these two-mode transmissions to BMW, but not adapt them into their lineup? This worries me, as GM certainly had developed great five and six speed transmissions for BMW at least five years ago, but failed to install them into their own vehicles until last year.

BMWphiles know the trannies are GM units. Their calls of German engineering speak of the suspension/steering tuning, handling, braking, etc.

I don't see this being a problem....unless GM has hung itself with another non-compete agreement.

Considering the plans for the Greenline and upping the mileage on the trucks even more, I think GM will use the tech concurrently.

Re: Insights Into GM Tech in Future BMWs

Hey why didn't BMW choose to go with the Toyoty system?

What dose this mean when GM gets chosen over Toyoty. I wonder how the media will spin this.

I bet it will be nothing like this----- If it were the other way around it would be.

Toyoty suffered a embarrassing black eye when vaunted German Automaker BMW choose General Motors hybrid system to power future models. This is a crushing blow to Toyoty in a market that they felt they owned. It can only be put down as bad management and short sighted development on behalf of Toyoty. In a brilliant move GM is the company that developed the right technology to provide to BMW, perhaps the fines car builder in the world with the system it needed. This leave Toyoty in a very weakend position and with a hybrid system that is years behind and clearly out of date.

To all Journalists. You have my permission to reprint this.

Re: Insights Into GM Tech in Future BMWs

Why would the media spin this? GM/BMW have an established history of working together.

And must you people make every GM thread about Toyota?

And BMW partnered with GM/Daimler because they did not want to get trapped into a Microsoft like licensing agreement for Toyota's technology. Its better in the long run if they have their own developed systems.

Re: Insights Into GM Tech in Future BMWs

GM has been working with BMW & DCX on the hybrid setup for a while now, so it will end up in vehicles from all companies. In a way it makes sense to do this to help cut costs for GM and also get it to market sooner.

Great news. BMW realizes that GM is worth collaborating with, and I think that is a great move for both parties, as long as GM will use the tech on it's vehicles also.

The 900's are going to use it. Chevrolet has already shown the 2008 Tahoe with this setup.
