Hartley Enterprises' Haybusa-derived 400hp 2.8L V8

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/05/19/h...rived-2-8l-v8/
If four's good, then eight must be better - that's the idea behind this jewel-like V8 engine built by Hartley Enterprises from two Suzuki Hayabusa four-cylinder powerplants.

The 75-degree V8 displaces 2.8 liters, weighs only 200 lb and puts out 400 hp at a window-rattling 10,000 rpm. Torque peaks at respectable 245 ft-lbs (at 7500 rpm!), although dyno runs for a 2.6 liter version show a fairly flat curve. Aside from boring out the 'busa block from 81mm to 83mm, none of the wide variety of performance enhancements available for the bike version have been applied to the HE V8, so it's safe to say we're nowhere near the performance limits of the design.

Hartley's diminutive V8 is produced to order, with the 2.8 liter version priced under $30,000, depending on options. Check out the Hartley Enterprises website for more details, including video of a dyno run with the engine installed in a Caterham 7.

Re: Hartley Enterprises' Haybusa-derived 2.8L V8

I wonder if this engine might fit under the hood of a Kappa car (Sky, Solstice) and the future Alpha platform?

We've been told to go for smaller engines but we don't want to left our V8, I think Hartley entreprises might found a way of having our cake and eating it too

If an LS7 can fit, this can too.

But... what about the low-end torque?

Merging safely onto the highway is my number one concern.

A 2.8 V8 is like a three-wheeled Cadillac.

Not interested.

Shesh!! Thats got to be a blast in a light weight car. At 200 lbs, I think that would be about teh weight of the turbo 2.0 motor!!!

I don't care for high revving engines. I still am in awe that it is 200 pounds.

Re: Hartley Enterprises' Haybusa-derived 400hp 2.8L V8

What an amazing piece of machinery. 200lbs. Wow. It sounds amazing too. This would be ideal for any very small car where weight is key. Lotus Elise, Ariel Atom etc.
Plus merging on the freeway: No problem, just keep the revs above 7000!

Re: Hartley Enterprises' Haybusa-derived 400hp 2.8L V8

200lbs? Holy crap!

Who cares if it only makes 245lb/ft of torque, if the rest of the car is lightweight, that's more than enough. I wouldn't be surprised if that is lighter than the turbo engine in the Solstice GXP. Anybody have weight listings for various engines available?

The whole engine weighs 200 pounds..

That thing weighs less than I do!

Man, that'd be fun to stuff in..well,...at that size it'd fit in just about anywhere. It's odd though--I was expecting a Ferrari-esque small-displacement wail from that engine--but I guess it makes sense that it still sounds like a motorcycle engine.

Re: Hartley Enterprises' Haybusa-derived 400hp 2.8L V8

This thing is crazy. I don't think it would have useful applications in most vehicles, but putting it into small cars for fun would work well for this engine. 400 horsepower, 200 pounds, (a 2.8L V8!), and 10,000 RPM! But at around $30,000, it would be cheaper to buy TWO LS7s and have a good chunk of money left over.

Why's that? Just because its a V8 and doesn't have torque like the LS7? I'm sorry but the LS7 is also a 7.0L engine while this engine is a 2.8! Thats less then half the size of that larger V8.

Lets consider this engine to GM's own 2.8 V6 found in the CTS....this 2.8 only has 210hp and 198Tq even GMs new h/o SIDI 3.6 V6 has only 300hp and 270 Tq...

Now add the fact that not only is this engine has that small of displacement but add tot he fact it weighs only 200lbs and can rev into 10k rpm range. This is like the 2.4 found in the S2000 I4 taken to the next level!

Cost would be an issue but if massed produced I could see cost being cut significantly. But as it stands right now....this would be a really fun engine to have fo someone with extra money to spend. And those numbers don't even include many upgrades that could be added to the engine such as turbos or chip enhancements!
