GM's sales of Flex Fuel Vehicles Jump 222%

http://www.autobloggreen.com/2006/06...p-222-percent/

We at AutoblogGreen have mixed feelings about this news. GM reported sales for its flex-fuel* vehicles such as the Chevrolet Silverado, Impala, and the GMC Yukon and Sierra rose 222 percent last month. (Pictured are the Silverado and Sierra.) Unfortunately, the increased sales are attributed to the $1000 offered by GM to buyers in the Chicago-Rockford area and Minnesota areas where E85 is readily available. Nationwide, though, sales of flex-fuel vehicles rose 128 which does show consumers are concerned about high fuel prices.

Yes.

Where I live, Hawaii, the state passed a law a few years ago requiring 10% Ethonol in our fuel in an attempt to encourage the sugar producers (which are all now out of business) to grow sugar cane for ethonol production. The results; we now have to import Ethonol from the mainland in addition to fuel. Once again, the state of Hawaii shows how little it understands the marketplace - notice our now extinct gas-cap law.

Re: GM's sales of Flex Fuel Vehicles Jump 222%

There is now (as of a week or two ago) a pump I can drive to in Houston, and are 17 more or so planned for Dallas and Houston, thanks to Kroger.

I do wish GM would put more focus on the Impala Ethanol capable FFV and the 31mpg it gets on regular Gas as well, because most people have been led by the ads to associate FFV's with guzzlers like the Tahoe and Avalanche, and guzzling E-85 isn't particularly monetarily thrifty or good for GM's image, either. If you're driving down the highway and getting 20mpg on gas in a Yukon, you're probably getting closer to 15mpg on 85% Ethanol. The drop in fuel economy you experience with E-85 is more palatable in a car that normally gets 21 city/31 highway mpg on regular gas -- than a truck that gets 15 mpg city/21 mpg hwy on gas. Especially now with Ethanol prices spiking due to the MTBE changeover. Advertising the big trucks running on Ethanol made plenty of sense a year or two ago when you could find E-85 for $1.80. Not so much now at $2.50.

I guess I'm speaking common sense outsider stuff here though, and forgetting about those all-important large SUV profit margins that sway GM exec opinions on what they decide to advertise....

Walmart is supposed to be installing E-85 pumps. The thing is, I don't know of any Walmarts in my area that sell gas.

Good news and I am happy about the ethanol now available in Houston. Thng is GM has nothing I would buy that is flex fuel. I really wish they would couple this with the ecotec's mild hybrid system. That way I could buy an Aura or something like that.

Oh yeah! Lets drive all over town to go to the ONE (currently) E-85 station. Even 10 in a city of Houston's size is still too little.

Its a start at least. And all that matters to me is whether or not there will be one available on my commute. Besides, we can't depend on Big Oil to push Ethanol -- not unless they control the flow, of course.

GM should market smaller FF Sedans not just the SUVs. Great news either ways!

Apparently there are only 2 pumps in all of Canada. This needs to change ASAP for GM to get these into the mainstream.

If there's money to be made the pumps will come.
