General Motors Unveils Plans for Centennial Celebration

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors Corp. plans to mark its 100th anniversary by looking ahead rather than through the rearview.
GM said Thursday a new initiative called GMnext will be used this year to introduce ideas for dealing with issues related to energy, the environment and globalization. The effort will highlight the company's introduction of next-generation vehicles and technologies, such as its Plug-In and Two-Mode hybrids.

GM also has launched a GMnext.com Web site that features opinions and insights from the general public, media and industry observers outside the company.

Still, the Detroit automaker isn't ignoring its past. It plans events throughout the year and a week of activities scheduled around Sept. 16 to commemorate the company's founding on that date in 1908 by Billy Durant, owner of Flint's Buick Motor Co.

The company said plans for that event and others soon will be announced.

We should have a first-ever GMi Meet at this thing.

Re: GM Unveils Centennial Celebration Plans

I love the website! It's excellently done and very modern. Way to go GM on that! 2008 will be a great year with awareness surrounding the 100th Celebrations, and isn't it great that on this 100th year GM finally has the product it needs to succeed. This year GM is more competitive and class leading then it's been in a long time. And the change came just in time...

Re: GM Unveils Centennial Celebration Plans

I watched the main video on the site. Seemed cool.

Hmm, around Sept 16. I won't have school, I'd love to visit Michigan again. Sounds like a great idea. Oh yeah, I need money to get there, for car rental, and hotel. Plus the money I'd spend on stuff while I'm there.

Re: GM Unveils Centennial Celebration Plans

One additional possibility for this would be to tie in the Oldsmobile National meet as a part of these events. The OCA Nationals will be held in Detroit at the end of July. Might be a good way to promote where GM has come from...

Hey, I got myself to Tulsarama without a hitch. No reason I can't do something similar for another 50 people.

Don't forget those of us who are upside down! Can we substitute our hotel room for a hostel and take the change in beer vouchers?

Re: GM Unveils Centennial Celebration Plans

This site is a great idea. Why not promote yourself? This is the beauty of the internet, you can get your own message out to a large number of people at a reasonable cost. They should run some commercials promoting the site, get the dealers involved with promoting it also.
