GM SUV's Get New Rollover Airbag System

Link: http://www.saturnfans.com/Cars/Futur...erairbag.shtml

SaturnFans.com has learned that GM plans to offer a new side-curtain air bag designed to help protect passengers better in a rollover accident. Within the next year, the Detroit News reports that five GM SUVs will offer a new, optional side-curtain airbag that will stay inflated for a longer period of time in the event of a rollover. The 2006 Saturn VUE is will be one of the first GM vehicles to offer the new air bag. The Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, and the Hummer H3 are expected to feature the air bag as well.

It should be an option for the first year out. Then for great press the new side-cutain air bags should be standard.
You can't lead the world from behind.

I hope GM makes them standard after a year because it will show that GM is committed to safety as it is to quality and design.

And Acura has had them standard since last year while Honda is making them standard for the MY06 Pilot.

I know that these bags are just debuting in these vehicles and will spread to more models, but you think that they would put these air bags in ALL suvs to really test the climate. And if they know what is good for them, these will be standard in a few years. But then again this is GM we're talking about here.

Re: GM SUV's Get New Rollover Airbag System

I find it interesting that GM works hard to put OnStar standard in almost all of its vehicles and then proceeds to spends millions of dollars advertising the safety benefits of it as well as giving X months free to new car buyers...

.... yet makes safety airbags optional?

Maybe they should put airbags in all cars and charge a yearly subscription?

GM needs to make these standard. Period. It would allow them to promote the heck out of how it is committed to safety and it would go alot farther in improving it's image than spending millions on a system that MIGHT or MIGHT NOT make money.

And I'm still trying to figure out why it's an option on the Solstice...I figured the new models would get it standard automatically.

probably so they can make the starting price under 20 grand. the $19,xxx model has practically nothing. A/c is like a $900 option. Although, with a convertible, i dont think i would get a/c.

So they take less profit [what ever the cost of the airbags] and still keep it under 20k?

Considering that many people will be buying their Solstice with optional equiptment, such as A/C, Radio, Leather, etc -- it's easy to recoup the air bag cost when spread across the entire fleet. Not to mention the fact they can brag about being safety minded.
