^^^ What he said. This kind of crap isnt necessary, GM has done been doing this for a while now as they start to improve their passenger car lines.

As far as im concerned too many Americans dont give a damn about anybody but themselves so if the whole industrial complex in the midwest go ass up they dont give a flying F.

America's automobile manufacturers deserve better treatment than the nasty excrement being thrown at them. The damn economy needs balance not just the budget, service sector aint gonna cut it alone we need production this country was built on production and was saved by production not paper pushing, bed making, and burger flipping.

Let me introduce a new Japanese word:

Inseki Jinin (taking responsibility through resignation, stepping down)

Do it and I'll believe you mean it, Wagoner-san.

Sure, it might be meaningless. Sure, you know the job better than anyone else and you have the full support of the same folks involved in the poor choices that led to the GM of today. According to your fans, it's NEVER a good time to say goodbye to Rick -- in good times or bad. They're virtually married to you. And from all accounts you're a nice guy.

It's about image, Wagoner-san. So please, step down and let the new GM begin.

Re: GM STATEMENT: "We acknowledge we have disappointed; Violated your trust; Lost foc

When I read the article, I didn't find it endearing ... all it did was enrage me. I've felt largely betrayed by GM products since the late '70s, feeling that the passion for the product displayed in the '50s and '60s was missing. GM felt that it had an "Everlasting Customer", to quote Jim Harbour, and it was so painfully slow to realize that it did not.

Perhaps if this bridge loan comes, it's time to discard the 'General Motors' name altogether and replace it. Let's truly start over.

Wrong. The CEO of Toyota apologized for their decline in quality almost 1 year ago.

Duh.
The only way they can get people in suburbia or the coasts to buy there cars is if they put an H or a T on the grill, or lastly build every vehicle as they have the Silverado, Malibu, and CTS; and then they may get back to 25% to 30% market share.

Because internet-based armchair CEO's are much, much smarter than real CEO's.

Actually, it's always easier to see these problems from the outside looking in. And, when the company is beholden unto the shareholders and not the consumer, you tend to lose focus. This is what happens when you depend on others for your livelihood.

Everybody already knows this, GM doesn't need to apologize they need to continue putting out better products. When quality is job #1, they won't have anything to apologize for.

Problem is they already did apologize for poor quality cars a couple of years ago, remember, via full pages in NYT, etc. Has anything changed since then?

I think the guts needed to do something like this are something to be admired. Most people are probably pissed because now by GM's own admission, many of the reasons people here have searched to blame GM's current state are irrelevant. Truly it comes down to products, and it's good to see GM truly committed to making desirable cars again. It seems the sleeping giant has finally woken. I just hope it doesn't doze back off.

To whom did Watanabe apologize? His employees? Shareholders? Board?Government? Customers? I bet they didn't take out full page ads in trade papers to make it.

Re: GM STATEMENT: "We acknowledge we have disappointed; Violated your trust; Lost foc

GM absolutely needed to do this ... and they should have done it weeks ago.

Unlike AIG, GM's disadvantage in all this is that they actually sell a product to consumers. A lot of folks out there who either used to own GM and left because of poor product or never even considered buying GM product because of reputation are now being asked to loan the company their tax dollars.

Many of them are basically saying: I've already voted with my feet ... why would I give you my tax dollars if I haven't been willing to give you my buying dollars?

GM MUST make the case to these voters to make it politically acceptable to support these loans. And, part of that means eating a little crow. It's a critical part of making a credible case that the GM of today and tomorrow is not the GM of 1988.

The issue I see here, though, is if you follow the logic of the ad, is should be followed quickly by one of two things. Either Wagoner gives a high profile interview and tells his story -- and it better include great anecdotes on why GM made dumb choices (before his reign ... he's been their since 1977) and why its taken so long to turn the ship around ... or he needs to resign.

I do think the former could work, particularly if he's willing to go back to the dark days (which, if I'm correct were before he was an exec) and can "do a Deloren" (read "On a Clear Day You Can See General Motors", if you haven't already) and canditly speak about his amazment of some of the decisions made at the time.

OR

2009 Chevrolet Malibu V6 LT2: Potential Incentive: $ 1,000.
Warranty: 10 Year, Bumper To Bumper

An enhanced warranty will return confidence to buyers and help dealers maintain service levels.

-Just a thought.
I like this idea. Those who trade frequently can take the former. Others who drive'em 'till they die, the latter.

I don't think an apology was exactly necessary but I like most of what this had to say.
